.308 160gr ftx 30-06 Load

Postby Nosparks » Mon Mar 18, 2013 6:48 pm

I got a new box of 160gr .308 30-30 Hornady FTX, I would like to trade for something similar in 30-06 or sell. I grabbed them by mistake at Bass Pro when I grabbed the rest of .06 ftx that was on the self. They wont take them back since I broke the seal... I went to load up some rounds for this weekend and realized when I saw the cannelure was so far up on the bullet. I paid $34 for the box (100 cnt) and will sell for that price plus shipping (3lb package).

Save ya allota time, money, and tons of aggravation.

Is there any reason you wouldn't want to use the FTX's?

You could always crimp them somewhere else besides in the existing cannelure.

Of course if you are going to move them at hyper speed they might not penetrate much, especially with a S'more Steal'en, Texas Sheep Dog Heart Shot (sorry tsd, sometimes I can't help myself), but a chest shot should be quite devastating on deer type critters.

If ya wanna go that route I could recommend a load if I knew your cartridge, barrel length, and weapon model.

This is an alternative and there is no real need to absolutely have to crimp into the cannelure and could save the day..

My fear was that this bullet isnt designed for .06 speeds, Hornady tops this 30-30 bullet 2300fps. While they dont even start .06 loads less than 2400fps. I love what the FTX/SST does for Thumper so its not the bullet type. There is a SST 165gr (which is the other box I bought, they were in the same slot on the shelf),Which is just a stiffer nose than the FTX and 5 grains heavy. So I wasnt real sure really what to do with them, But if you got a some loads or a good starting piont for a load I would love to take a look at them. I love to shoot and will shoot almost anything, not many people will sit down and shoot 100 rounds out of .06 that has no mods let alone a recoil pad like I will. And if I can shoot these to easy my addiction, and save the majority of 165s for hunting that would be a win win!!

Winchester 640A 30.06 Bolt Action
22" barrel
Remington brass
Im limited on powder types, all IMR 3031, 4831, 4350(nearly gone, and non to be found), and 4064. I have worked loads with all of these for .06
I have magnum and non magnum primers

I have some good recipes for the 165gr bullets, but none with the powders you have. 165s are a great match for the .30-06.

Hoot, 165s are a great match for the .30-06.

165s are bar far the best performing round you can get with ease for .06. Although I would like to find some 174gr like this gun was intended to use. Reading and talking to some of the Ole' Timers I hunt with, I found out that it (174gr 9°boat tail and un-named IMR powder) reached nearly 2700fps and could reach 5500 yards. Mind you that was a machine gun just spraying bullets, but a M1917 or a M1 was expected to preform the same. But in 1936 they realized it was surpassing the saftey limitations of most ranges. So they flattened the tail, changed the powder to IMR 4895 and reduced the weight to 152-150gr. That cut the possible max range to around 3300yds, and the velocity went to around 2800fps. I want to know where theres a 3300yd range!

Enough of the semi accurate history lesson.

Im gonna go ahead a treat these 160s like a mild 165 load for a starting point and work up.

Check your PMs for update.
I do load 30-30 and those would be great addition to my deer loads.

I didn't do all the data for you as it looks like you may have a buyer.

Buuttt, if you were going to use your existing Powder, 3031 looks like one that will put you into the 30-30 speed area. With 41gr of 3031 and using your cannelure, but not going over 3.340" OAL, you can expect 2400fps area with about 40,000psi +-, beings as you are good for 60,000psi 40K, should be real safe, of course assuming your reloading Practices are up to safety standards, something I can't control or predict for you.

There are many powder choices (lemme know if ya want me to suggest other choices from your lists of powders. FYI, using 4831 & 4350, which both are superior in the 06, don't slow the bullet enough for your purposes, as I understand them) and Safely slowing down this bullet should pick up quite a bit of accuracy (maybe or maybe not, twist will have another big effect, but either way, accuracy should greatly improve, no mater the twist, when slowing this bullet down)..

WC,
I assume you ment 41gr of 3031?
With that Im figuring around somewhere of 2400-2600fps. Which I would think would still be in performance tolerances of this bullet. I found on the Hornady site that the factory ammo tested at 2400-2000fps.

one more question are you or do you use "QuickLoad" or "Load from a Disk"?

Also could some one possibly move this to reloading and rename this thread. :D
