First Kill With My Thumper

Postby svanderploeg » Tue Nov 18, 2014 8:45 pm

Opening morning brought me some success. I was so excited to use my 450 that I brought it along to hunting camp in Northern lower Michigan. For those of you not familiar with this state, in the lower half of the lower peninsula you are not allowed to use a bottle necked center fire rifle. They've just legalized straight walled rounds, and thats how I came across this fantastic round. Anyway, opening morning saturday found me in my tree and right as light was coming I could see a big bodied deer down in the gully. I waited for what seemed like an hour for it to get light enough to make out that it was a buck, and then waited some more to see that it was a legal buck(3pt a side APR). Once I confirmed it was the deer Ive been after during archery season, thats all it took. 75 yard shot, blew out his heart with a quartering to shot. The DNR aged him at 4 1/2 years old and dressed at 150 lbs. This is my biggest bodied deer I've killed and second in antler size. Thank you to all for all the great info on here to help me out with my new favorite caliber!

Congrats! BTW -- in MI, what is the maximum case length allowed? 1.7" or 1.8".

Thanks guys, I hunt in the Grand Rapids area where I live, but my between my dad and uncle we have almost 80 acres up in Buckley MI. That is where the best hunting is for me, that is where I got this guy. Im back down around GR for probably the rest of the year now.

As Al said, 1.8 is the max

Nice! I just picked up an upper for use in the Michigan "shotgun" zone too. We'll see what happens this fall!
