Finally got my elk

Postby Jim in Houston » Wed Nov 25, 2015 6:11 pm

After having a disappointing elk hunt in 2014 with my BM450, which did not take down the elk despite two solid hits at 200 yards, I "upgraded" to a .30-06 Savage 111XP Pro Hunter with a Nikon ProStaff scope (3-9x 40), which got the job done after a four hour stalk at the LK Ranch near Meeker, Colorado, in October. The range was just over 100 yards.

This was the smallest (5x5) of the four elk taken that week at the Ranch in the Ranching for Wildlife Program (all the others were 6x6), and a total of 18 were taken during the season this year. I donated most of the meat to a family in Grand Junction, who have a daughter with severe food allergies. She can't eat beef or chicken (additives like antibiotics or hormones are suspected), but can handle wild game.

4 hour stalk at those altitudes?!!! You're a better man than I am. If that had been me, the stalk would have been followed by a Medivac! ;)

Congrats on your deserved success.

Congrats Jim and glad it all came together for you.

I got hooked out there in the early 90's when a local bunch invited me to tag along..................ok ok more like I begged to go!!!!!!

It was a DIY hunt they have been doing for years, rented horses, packed way way up and back in, 8-9 days we stayed on that mountain, loved every minute of it. Elk weren't the huge calendar bulls we all drool over, but 5x's and 6x's a were the norm. On my 13th trip in 08 I took a nice 6x7 and hung up my paniards after that.

Dam I miss Colorado!! :(

Nice job. I wish I had gone this year, but my son and everyone else had to work.
