Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6X

Postby Billinthedesert » Mon Dec 05, 2022 11:28 am

I was looking for a 30mm scope with good light-gathering qualities in a reasonably compact package, so I ordered this from Optics Planet. If figured the illuminated reticle option would be useful in poorer light. This is going on a Bear Creek upper with 18-inch barrel and right-hand charger. Met a guy at our club range shooting this style upper in .458 SOCOM, which I have experience with. That led me to try the Bushmaster for the first time.
Looking forward to testing 225-grain FTX handloads over 296.
My goal is to have a reliable, feral hog-worthy rig on hand just in case the skies part and someone invites me to hunt the critters here in west-central Texas.

Try some 230 grain FMJs on those piggies. The performance should be impressive!

That's sure a lot better than the expansion you get shooting them from a 1911 at 750 fps! The latter look like you could reload them and shoot them again. :)

PS: I'm still gob-smacked at what they did to that steel plate in the back pasture!
In Theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In Practice, there is.

The trouble I have found with lesser costly LVPO's is that they lose a bit of light gathering ability on 6x or higher due to the small objective. Some makers have come out with 34mm tubes and 28mm objectives to help with this but it still is lacking compared to a 36mm or 40mm objective that can be had on 1.5-6, 2-7, 2-8, 2.5-10, 3-9, etc, scopes. I don't consider 1x to be a priority on a hunting scope, as might be for personal defense arms.
