Dummy gas block

Postby BayouBob » Wed Feb 01, 2012 12:33 am

This has been discussed before but I can't remember where. Does the dummy gas block on the 20" 450 serve any purpose at all? Does it serve as some sort of vibration dampener or anything? I am thinking about lightening up my Thumper by putting a lightweight handguard and a light stock and if the dummy gas block is just for looks I may remove it just to shave a couple of ounces.

I took mine off and haven't noticed any difference. That gas block now is serving a very useful purpose on my 6.5 Grendel. Hoot gave me that suggestion as he did the same thing. That gas block costs about $56.00. So save it for a future project. Or you could just mail it to me as a late birthday gift!!

Dawg, Is the barrel finished under the block?

Its actually for mounting some Bushy front iron sight systems (made by YHM)...non-functional other than that.

Commander, I saw that front sight in the old paper Bushmaster catalog 4 years ago but haven't seen them since. Do you know if they are still made?

Not sure...I bought one and mounted it as the front BUIS...if they're not in the Bushy catalog, you might check Yankee Hill Machine? Sorry I can't be more definite...

How hard was it to remove? I assume you have to remove the flashider but what else is involved?
