Zero Suggestions for EOTech

Postby carsoca2 » Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:34 pm

I am just about finished with my new toy and was wondering what would be a good initial zero range for a 16" 450 with an EOTech and magnifier. I'll be running Hornady 250 factory. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would go with 150 yards, but then, I live on the prairie and some of my shots could get a bit on the long side.

I can see how you'd factor the prarie into the equation with 150 yds. I will mainly be using it to drop hogs at the recommended max effective range of 200 yds or less though.

Does anyone know of what the rise and drop is of a 450 round while at a particular yard line after zeroing at "XX" yds? I know I came across that somewhere recently but can't seem to find it.

There is another discussion thread here with additional information and a link to the Hornady ballistic calculator on their website - http://www.450bushmaster.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11052&sd=d&start=10.

Some suggested changes to your parameters:
Use BC of .210 per Hornady - http://www.hornady.com/store/450-Bushmaster-250-gr-FTX-LEVERevolution/ (click on the detailsl button)
Cross sectional density of .175 (if called for by the calculator)
Wind speed 0 and wind direction of 12:00 or 6:00 (0 or 180 degrees) - take the wind out of the results for comparison.
Muzzle velocity of 2150 for factory load - based on some limited chrono tests
Sight height of 2.5 inches (or better yet, measure yours and use that, mine is about 3.25)

Here is a chart I prepared from several calculators. I couldn't upload a larger version that is more legible, but the Hornady results with a 100 yd zero are on the black line, my 5.11 Tactical Watch Ballistic Computer (Horus) is the orange line, the Big Game Info computer is the magenta line, and the average of these three is the green line. Note that even though the zero is at 100 yards and the Hornady computer gives a point at (100,0) the best fit polynomial curve is showing a rise of a few inches at 100 yards.

As someone else mentioned, we need field data to check the models.
