Night vision/infrared scopes... Which work?

Postby Blasternank » Wed Dec 11, 2013 10:11 pm

I'm going to get one and I'm no where up to speed on them. I was looking at the Flir scout ps32, but that is just a heat sensing hand held. I'd like to get something like that to mount on my rifle, but that I could use to possibly find a wounded animal or something like that at night. I'm sure this discussion has been beaten to death, but I'd appreciate any information.

Thanks

I'm currently using a ATN first gen MK 350 NV scope. But I too, am considering a FLIR. But get ready to spend a pretty penny. FLIR scopes usually start around 12K. My research has me basically flabbergasted. But I am zeroing in. Best thing I can say right now is watch YouTube videos from Optics Planet. Instead of FLIR, I'm considering this one.

ATN and Armasight are both good sources. I gather you're wanting a thermal imaging system?...do you want an imager or a riflescope? To split the difference, there are thermal imagers without aiming reticles that can be mounted in front of a standard daylight riflescope...and the list goes on. For an example, look at Wildcatter's avatar here...his hog hammer there has the day-plus-night vision in front setup.

ATN is probably the best of the bunch, and their newest thermal riflescopes start around $5K these days.

There are some things I did not like about NV scopes that I tried. Maybe ruined by the fact that I get to shoot the $30K to $50K thermal, IR optics here and there...FLIR is the bomb. But I don't want to spend the the requisite thousands for a decent one. So, I made my own "poor mans" NV optical set-up.

Consisted of one of these: http://www.crimsontrace.com/products/ty ... 1-9696-696 and one of these: http://www.bushnell.com/hunting/outdoor ... h-2-x-24mm

I swapped out the laser unit to one of these: http://www.burrisoptics.com/ardbal.html but the CTC unit works fine.

I made a rail mount that accepts the tripod mount for the Bushnell. Basically, for about $400, you can get a system that, performance wise, rivals the $1000 to $1500 NV scopes. The monocular I got is 2x, but you can get other mags as well.

I am using the ATN 390 on my hog setup and it came with a IR emitter that is completely invisible to everything. I added a ND3 subzero green laser that can light up an area or just a dot. Looks like a train coming if your in front of it, but critters can't see it. My kill zone is 150 yds, and if he's in it he's toast and he'll never know I'm there. Range of the optic is only 4x and that's my practical limit ken
Here piggy, piggy, piggy, I got something for you.

I too have the ND3AR. What's weird is that it may not scare wildlife, but it freaks my goats out big time. They see it and spook out. But it's an awesome night light for hunting.
