Leupold Ultimate Slam

Postby BD1 » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:33 pm

Well I broke down and bought another one of those "junky" Leupolds. I mounted a 3-9x40 "Ultimate Slam" on the .450B and took it to the range today with a couple of 250 grain FTX loads. 37 grains of Lilgun produces about 2170fps in my 16" rifle. I sighted it in at 100 yards in 5 shots, then put up targets at 100, 200 and 300 yards to try out the SABR reticle. Pics are below. I'm happy. I took no special care, and didn't let the barrel cool, I just loaded them up and banged them out. 100 yards to 200 yards is a no brainer. Low and dispersed at 300 yards, there is no "dot" for 300, you're using the top of the thicker stadia on the lower half of the reticle, and that completely covers the 2" circle on the target at 300 yards. A good trigger would have helped at 300 and after today I may spring for one.
The 100 yard berm is on the left in the sun, 200 yard berm is on the right in the shadow and the 300 yard berm is in the distance down the middle. The orange dot is 1 1/4".

I used the same targets for the second load; 40.5 grains of WC297 yielding 2210 fps. Still good at 100, high and not so good at 200, but better than the L'il Gun load at 300. I may try bumping the Lil'Gun load to 37.5 and running the WC297 load under something with a little lower BC, (and a little less costly), like the Sierra 250 grain flat point for an all purpose blasting load.

Brass, the Lil'Gun load is in Hornady factory brass, clean and neat. The WC297 load is in cut down .284 brass, sooty and shows just a hint of ejector shiney mark.

All good at 100, that's a 10 shot group, 5 Lil'gun and 5 WC-297

at 200 yards we are more dispersed and higher than the Lil'Gun load

at 300 yards the extra velocity is paying off. Still a little high but a 4 1/2" group at 300 will work for anything I need to do. The no math/ no adjustment approach is worth it to me.

Nice shooting. Looks like a dead hog is on the menu!

Holy, Free-Holey (That's MudBug Country Talk),!!

Man! You greased the one and two hundred yard targets and the 300yd is well with-in a Minute-of-Grizzly, and that's Dead Deer or anything else country, .."Show-Nuff".. (that's Bayou Bob Talk)!!!

Now, if I'm looking at the 300 yd group correctly that's about an nine inch group, or 3.0-MOA, watt-Duh-ya-Wants-Olie-ah, egg in your McDonald's Coke-Cola? (that's WC talk and you can tell who the retarded one is and if you don't believe me, just ask my wife, lol).

Consider; GI Match Standard is 2 MOA..

I myself use a ten inch target. I only want to know, what is the max range I can hit that 10" target, with any given load. 10 inches allows me some margin of error and still kill the target, that is, with the proper bullet and load. If that range is 600yds, so be it. With todays range finders, just adjust the sights, let'er go, and git yo Knife out..

I don't care what the Paper FT/LB Energy Stats say, a better indicator of terminal field results is the Taylor Index +35% (still not perfect) and the testimonies from guys that have been doing it all these years with the 45Pro and now the 450b. You take a 45cal 250gr Bullet +- 50gr, at 2000-2500fps (going up everyday as you guys keep up the pace and maintain safety stds.) and the FT/Lb Energy charts, don't even come close to telling our story. I'm here to tell you, that with the proper bullet for the mission at hand, at our speeds, we can decide any issue at three hundred yards and beyond, period, no excuses, hands down!! I have thousands of customers that will tell you 300yds is just a walk in the park and our very own BD, just proved it!!

Good Go 'ol-Man!!

Ps..Where's the pressure signs? I still see your getting soot down the side, usually from low pressures..

I didn't tape the combined 300 group, but the Lil'Gun load is the 5 shot spread across the bottom of about 9". The 5 shots upper left are the WC 297 load, about 4" to 4 1/2". I can live with that. I'm just tickled that the SABR reticle worked out so well with the 250FTX.

Ok, Sports Fans, unless my math fails me, that equates to 1.3 to 1.5 MOA!!!

Not Bad for an AR that will out-"KILL" a 338wm or even a 375HH, with 24" barrels vs our 16-20" ( That is, out-KILL, not out-FLY, but then again we have all seen and as BD has so amply proven, that even the 338 will have a hard time flying with his 450 loads. Which then makes the only advantage to the std magnums, being in Bullet Path i.e. arc and again, but with todays laser range finders, the arc is a moot-point, just a quick sight adjustment and go to 600yds if you need it. But I'd say that Junk-a-matic BDC of BD's, wink, has got every range covered to 300+ with no adjustments, wouldn't you say?) and I unequivocally make this statement after all those years as a PH and the Mega-Tons of Moose, Bears, Caribou, Deer, and chipmunks, I've either killed myself or watched the Client kill, with every kind of weapon and caliber you can imagine, and we all know you can imagine allot.

Perhaps WC would like to "testify" now that he has peered through one... particularly after hitting 3 bulls @100 :?:
