Need an Optic

Postby ryr8828 » Sun Apr 18, 2010 5:15 am

Anticipating the arrival of my 16" upper so I'm looking for an optic. I'm thinking on this 2-7 fullfield II with ballistic plex reticle.

Thoughts? Will 7x be plenty for me to go 200 yards?

IMHO, 2-7x scopes (I have one) are great for a woods/brush gun, IE 100 yards and in. If you are just trying to hit a combatant in the torso, out in the open, its fine far beyond that. I've had shots on whitetails (I'm sure it applies to hogs also) where I had to thread between trees at a distance and I appreciated all the zoom I could get. My 55 year old eyes are not what they used to be. If I were anticipating constantly shooting at 200 yards, I would opt for a 3-9 or 3-10. But that's just me.

I've been using 1.75x5 Burris fullfield scopes on my short range big bores for several years and have never come up short or felt underpowered. But, Burris gave up on this as a riflescope and set the paralex back and now offer it as a shotgun scope... @$$hats!

2-7 is about the perfect scope in my neck of the woods.
If you build it they will come, If I build it... I'll take the damn thing home!

After thinking about it this morning between golf shots, I'm thinking about taking my 3-9 bdc fullfield II off of my precision ar and putting it on the .450.
Then buying 2 Simmons 5-20x50, they're on sale for $125 or $109 depending on which reticle I choose. I'll put one on my fnar, put the other on my Rem 700 7mm mag.
Then put the Leupold 4-14 that's on my fnar on my precision ar.

Then I'm set for optics except for my dpms .308 20". I'm shooting irons off the carry handle on it, or will. I haven't got to shoot it yet. The clean every shot for 20 instructions have slowed me down, haven't found the time for that yet.

After thinking about it some more I'm going with the burris 2-7.

Unless I change my mind again before ordering it tonight. Going by the who's received their uppers thread I have plenty of time.

I have tried several different optics on the 450, and the one scope that truly stood head and shoulders above the others was the 3-9x Nikon Omega muzzleloader scope. The extra eye relief makes the scope sit closer to a scout style so target acquisition is AWESOME on running deer and bear. Last winter I had a 375lb sow black bear round a rock outcrop and stand up about 25-30 yards away, I shot more out of instinct/survival than anything, the extra eye relief allowed a very quick double tap to the sow's chest.

I ordered the burris 2-7 fullfield II with bdc from Midway. Also got the cheap simmons 6-20 mild dot for my fnar.
Ordered an lpk for my lower while I was at it. So I've got everything I need now if my upper ever arrives.
