I recognize the buffer and the tape measure. What's that other thing?

The insides of the buffer. The free floating weights, rubber disks,aluminum spacer and end bumper.

That's the guts of a factory rifle buffer?
Or is that a prototype?

That's your typical factory rifle buffer. car buffers are basicly the same but without the spacer and only 3 weights. 3-1/4", 2.9oz total.
