Being on the front range of the rockies where the longest shot is about 200 yards for most kills I wouldnt think to hard about which weapon to use, the 450 ROCKS, but if your shots are much further I would have to use something else

He was looking for a long range cartridge and thought the 450b would be a good choice to put on top of his AR lower instead of a .223. I wanted to point out that at long ranges the 6.5 Grendel has more energy left than the 450b.

i bought a 450b for one reason, to be able to stop larger game at shorter distances (0-200yds)... that means anything that looks at me like i am lunch and weighs over a couple hundred pounds is pretty much toast if i do my part :o ... i have placed several 6" patterns at 200 yards free hand, less then one second in between shots with about a ten inch drop, plenty good for me(i cant operate my 45-70 levergun that fast and stay on target)... what you wont see me doing is trying to be a "sniper" with this round...

downrange a heavier bullet does not need all that much energy anyways, it just does a "mow through"...

just a thought...

cheers

Just curious.. How do you have it sighted in?

I was playing with a ballistics calculator the other day trying to figure out how to sight in so it was only a few inches low as 200 yrd.. My home range maxes out at 75 yrd though- It looked like if you were +3" at 75 yds you would be about 2.5" low at 200yds with factory ammo..

Anybody know if the factory 450b is pretty close to these calculators?

From what I've tested, they are very close. Make sure you check your sight height as AR mounts seem to typically be higher than bolt action rifles. Once I adjusted for that, It was on.

What is your sight height above the c/l of the bore. I use 2.5".

if you sight in 2" high at 75 yards, your calculations would be pretty close. If your use a point blank circle of 6 inches, so the bullet travels no more than 3 inches above and below the line of sight. Sighted 2 inches high at 75 yards would give you point blank range of 200 yards.

I personally sight in for 100 yards. All of my "quick shots" will be within that range. Anything beyond that I have time to use my range finder and hold accordingly.

Took the bushy out last week and shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards all shoots touching. Buddy who also bought a .450B but choose to bring his Beowulf with hand loads was shooting a 5 Inch group at 100 yards. He wasn't happy since he was going to take the .50 with him on an elk hunt. Now he's going to take his .308. Not sure why he wouldn't take the Beowulf, his group was still a kill shot as a 5 inch group. Think he was kinda sore about the Bushy out preforming his handloads though.

Exactly my point... many of the calculators often default to a 1.5" sight height, which would make 3" high at 75 be about 3" low at 200. Mine is 2.5" as well as Siringos, which changes it to about 2.2 high at 75 to get 3 low at 200. I agree with Siringo. If you sight in closer to 1.5" high at 75, you will be within 2" anywhere out to 175. Just aim at the spine behind the shoulder from there out to 250. :D

While muzzleloading we saw a HUGE coyote (which i missed with my ML shooting by the truck headlights) - I was wanting to use the 450B after deer season when we go back after the 'yotes.. Because of some open fields, I didnt want to worry about holdover past 150 yds..

I have a 5.56 upper - but I just want to kill something with the 450b LOL
