Shot my 450 for the first time, ejection issues?

Postby 2002silverex » Tue Oct 02, 2012 10:42 am

Ive got a barrett rec 7 lower just attached a 16" 450 bushmaster upper. Shot it for the first time yesterday and every 3 rounds or so would get stuck while ejecting. the spent shell would be half our of the chamber and half in. Anyone else seeing this?

Thanks in advance.

While I haven't had that issue, given that you thoroughly cleaned and lubed it ahead of time, it's probably just needing some break-in. It does help to polish the underside of the mag lips, where the cases rub against while being stripped. Others may have more experience with that particular issue though.

Whats the average trajectory of the hornady 250gr? say at muzzle, 25, 50, 100?

I was dead on at 25, and not even hitting the paper at 100. My muzzle loader which also shoots a 250gr hornady is dead on at 25, pretty close at 100....? Figured the 450 might be the same, i guess not.

Thanks

Suggest you check out the Hornady Ballistic Calculator at http://m.hornady.com/ballistics-resource/ballistics-calculator. The ballistic coefficient is .210. This, and other data on the factory round can also be found on the Hornady website at http://www.hornady.com/store/450-Bushmaster-250-gr-FTX-LEVERevolution. You can put in the ranges (0, 25, 50 , 100, etc., yards) at which you want results.

Here is an output with a zero at 100 yards.

Ballistcs Calculator
Distance Rise/Drop
0 -3.3
25 -1.7
50 -0.6
75 0.0
100 0.0
125 -0.6
150 -1.9
175 -3.9
200 -6.7

Most people zero at 100 or 200 yards. I have zeroed at 50 yards and been almost on the bull at 100 yards without any adjustment.

I initially had similar ejection problems (there are a lot of posts in various threads on this topic and some very esoteric "fixes" that people have tried, as well as recommendations on magazines and followers). On my second trip to the range, after having about a 20% failure to eject rate on the first visit (fired 60 rounds), I was all ready to take data on each round fired, which magazines were having problems, etc. I didn't have one failure on that trip, nor has the problem repeated itself after several hundred rounds. I think Hoot is right (OK, Hoot IS right), the magazines seem to need some minor tweaking of the feed lips or just some run time to "polish up" the feed lips and get things running smoothly. Search the forum for some of the information on this topic, and report back, if it continues for you (or not - would be good to know if this really is a self correcting problem).

I had a problem with the gas port not being lined up exactly right on mine. Once I got it lined up and loctited down, the problem vanished.

Well thats strange because yesterday at the range I was 1" high at 25 yards and not touching paper at 100 yards.

Guess I will have to give it another try. Its tough with the 1-4 power trijicon accupoint. The triangle bar reticle is going to take some getting used to at 100 yards +

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried "bore sighting" by removing the upper, pulling the bolt and charging handle, then resting the upper on a support (like sandbags) so that you can see the bullseye through the bore of the barrel? Then if you lift your head without touching the rifle and look through the site, you can tell where the sight is aimed on (or above, below, etc.) the target and ajust the sight until it lines up with the bullseye as seen through the barrel. This should at least put you on the paper and avoids chasing the bullet around the backstop while trying it sight in.

Lube, Lube, Lube, ya gotta shoot them wet, but ya also have to keep the oil out of the chamber, so that the chamber being dry, will hang unto the case, instead of smaching the bolt, because the chamber is wet. So, wet BCG and Dry Chamber.

After the above is it presist, then port/gas block location and other minor problems could be the cause.

Yup, ya gotta be 2"+- low at 25yds, if you want to start zeroing at 100yds, with factory fodder, our guys have also given you a bunch of good ideas, do them, and then get back to us..
