Thinking about another 450, tromix concern

Postby Bmt85 » Wed Nov 09, 2016 8:00 pm

So I have a factory 16" upper and have no complaints so far. But I really want to build one, because I'm 6'4" and prefer 18-20" barrels, and I want a longer than a carbine gas length. I've been watching for Franklin armory to get there 20" rifle gas barrels back, but it's been almost a year. I think I narrowed it down to tromix or gryphon. However, I have a concern with tromix. They only run a light weight profile, which is great, but the barrel diameter is only .785 after the chamber. So roughly .167" thickness of metal from I.d. to o.d., which does not give me a good feeling, especially because I reload and plan on leaning it. So am I overthinking it, or should I be concerned?

I wouldn't be concerned Tony makes good stuff.

Buddy just ordered a 18" Gryphon barrel, should be able to fondle it this weekend, if there's anything in particular you want measured just holler.

Take a look at the LAR Grizzly in 45 Win Mag. Same bullet, same pressure, 40k. Been around since the early 80's. No reports of barrel failures.

Barrel diameter in front of the chamber. .575"

.785 is way larger than required.

Good to know I'm concerned about nothing!

Tony, do you mind if I ask what metals you use for the barrel and bolt, also what coating or treatments are used on them?

Have you looked at the made in Michigan BartZ 450? Our barrels are all 416R SS. They are available 16" and 20", both are mid gas, mid weight (.875 under handguard). Our bolts are 9310 and special built for the 450 they are not re-cut from 5.56 bolts (ask others how their bolts are made).

Also, the good people on this forum will tell you, you do not want a rifle-length gas system 450. They are extremely fussy. Mid-gas is much more reliable, even carbine is better than rifle but its a little more recoil and a bit tough on brass.

Didn't think you sold just the barrel and bolt. Are the 20" barrels threaded?
I know the rifle length gas can be fussy, but I'd still like to play with one.

Our chromoly 450 barrels are 4150, coated with 2400 Series bake-on Gun Kote. Bolts are Carpenter 158, parkerized.
