Lower for 450 Bushmaster??

Postby winman1550 » Fri Nov 25, 2016 2:15 am

New to the forum and new to the AR community!

Looking at a DPMS Oracle and wanted to know if the lower will work for the 450 upper? Also which is the way to go 16" or 20" barrel?

Thanks in advance and look forward to learning all I can from the fine people of this forum.

welcome aboard, your good to go on that lower.

I have had both 16 and 20" factory uppers, personally like the 16" just for handiness, if I were to build another one, I might op for a 18" with midlength gas.

Welcome to our electronic camp fire! I see that Hoot got you fixed up and approved here. TBH on barrel length, it's all personal preference. I like both lengths! But the longer ones seem to etch out a bit more FPS. Around 127FPS more in a 20" than a 16". But the 16" is lighter and easier for thick stuff.

I have built, owned and tested 16, 18, and 20" barrelled uppers in 450 BM. My personal favorite is the 18" mid-length gas setup.

Would like to hear your thoughts on each and what makes the 18" your favorite. Who's barrel and what buffer are you using on the 18"?

I have built more than one upper with the Tromix 18" barrel and bolt combo. No issues at all and very accurate. That length is a good compromise offering nearly the fps/energy of the 20" and I like a shorter rifle for hunting. The mid-length gas system smoothes out the cycling compared to the carbine length gas length found on most 16" barrels. Aesthetically, I prefer a 12"-14" hand guard on my AR's and that length fits well on the 18" barrel in my opinion. The balance seemed a bit front heavy with the 20" barrel plus muzzle device as compared to the 18" Tromix too. If I could get dealer pricing from Tony I would use his barrels exclusively. :)

I have not tried the Gryphon barrels out yet. I am sure they are of great quality as well and bonus points for being Made in Michigan too! Maybe I can wrangle a demo barrel out of them so I can give them a good field trial. If someone wanted me to build an upper with a stainless barrel they would be my first call.

I have used both standard weight carbine buffer weights and the Spikes Tactical ST-T2 buffer with good results.

After two seasons and four deer shot with this setup I am now up to a total of 25 yards tracking. Dead Right There is the result I want in my hunting rig and this combination does the trick.
