Just noticed this new factory load for the 450b on ammoseek.com from XCaliber Ammunition: its a 225gr FTX at 2300fps...

XCaliber is happy to announce the 450 Bushmaster with Hornady's Flex Tip Expanding (FTX) bullets. These bullets feature an interlocking design that keeps the core of the bullet and the jacket together, creating a deeper penetrating and more humane kill. Great for hunting any North American quarry, this cartridge will provide controlled expansion, enhanced accuracy and flatter trajectories, shot after shot. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

Additional Information
Manufacturer XCaliber
Caliber .450 Bushmaster
Number Rounds 20
Case Type brass
Bullet Type FTX
Bullet Weight 225 Grain
Muzzle Velocity 2297 FPS
$25.99/20

I reloaded some 225 grain FTX with Lil'Gun and WSR primers, seated them to the cannelure at 2.120" and my 18" lightweight Tromix barrel produced the grouping above (4 shots) at 100 yards.

Velocity was 2498 FPS so their number seems a bit low ...

I'll have to roll my own...they only ship ammo to FFL's in NY.

Impressive group Pig_Popper. You'll have to share that recipe with me in a PM sometime.

Was that barrel one of those 1:32's that Tony was selling, or some other twist? You may have already told me but I forgot.

I ask because it would be good to get as many members with different makes, lengths and twists of barrels to test them. They may have loaded them light to allow for the folks who use a 1:16 twist, as that will jack up the velocity.

This is a small, NE Ohio company. I have their 300gr 45/70 Hornady JHP load and let me tell you it is quality, quality ammo! I have a sub MOA group out of my Remlin made 1895 lever gun that will prove it! Great guy to deal with too, in my experience.

I'm getting a couple boxes to test out of my 20" 1/24 barrel...I'll set up the Chrony to see what they do...I'm guessing accuracy should be pretty good; IIRC the 225 FTX does well out of the standard Bushy barrel. We'll see, probably this coming Monday or thereabouts...

So, got some of these to test, range time TBA. They look great, very consistent seating depth and are crimped to 0.474 at the case mouth, which is on the mark. So far, so good.

The 225 FTX will exhibit 3 accuracy nodes as far as I know. That was out of my 1:24 20" stock Bushy barrel. I'm reluctant to give powder charge data because the characteristics of Lil Gun changed (faster) after I wrote the article almost 7 years ago. They are a known performer. The best accuracy I've ever achieved with my original barrel despite it having some chamber dimensional issues (little loose and little out of round). I do question the ads contention about "controlled expansion". It was designed for 45 LC velocities. Raw bullet prices unlike the 200 and 250 FTX' are for boxes of 100 not 50. If you shop around, they can be found for 26 ¢ each. The cannelure location makes it an excellent choice for the good old taper crimp. Properly applied, they stay put.

This image has gotten more mileage than any in my library and for those who have seen it over and over, I apologize. Here's my best 5-shot, 100yd 450b group, courtesy of the 225 FTX. Indeed the proof is in the pudding:

1/2 inch grid pattern.

Nice to be corroborated once in a while. However, when I sold my original barrel to fund the purchase of a Trident 1:16 twist Image barrel, the recipe no longer worked as well. Not that twist alone is the only contributor to a load's performance. The Trident went to a new home and I'm back to 1:24.
