450 Bushmaster or 458 SOCOM??

Postby Bouse1991 » Sun Apr 09, 2017 8:14 pm

Hello all I'm new to this forum and am looking for some help. I have been comparing the 450 and the 458 and can not decide between the two..Strictly looking for a hunting caliber. I have the ability to reload. I've googled and YouTubed but I want feedback from someone who has experience with hunting these calibers. Thanks for the add and thanks for the info!

much of your decision may be limited to what your state allows for hunting - many states for example have areas (like the southern half of michigan) that do not allow bottle neck cartridges for deer hunting. so calibers like the 450 bushmaster and the 50 beowulf are the go-to big bore ar calibers over the 458 because of the cartridge design.

as far as their ability to kill, i'm sure both calibers are more than capable of getting the job done for just about anything with at least two legs here in north america.

Cost of ammo for 458 is double the price for 450BM. Even if you reload, the cost is much higher. And while 450BM brass is still not available everywhere, the 458 brass is harder to find. Plus, this is the 450BM forum and we are prejudiced! Joking aside, the 450BM will do anything the 458 will within reason.Plenty of killing power and accuracy is outstanding. Go with the 450

The above post is incorrect.

.458 SOCOM ammo currently runs $35.50 for 20rds, loaded with the 300gr Hornady HP bullet.
450BM normally runs $32 - $33.50 a box, but is currently on sale for $27 at Midway.

If you reload, 450BM brass is $43.00 per 50. .458 SOCOM is $38.00 per 50.

There hasn't been any shortage of 458 SOCOM brass in the last 2 years. You can order all you like off Starline's website.

Midway currently has 12 offerings for the 458 with the cheapest being $50 for a box of 20. Take the facts and make your own conclusion. https://www.midwayusa.com/458-socom/br?cid=19777

Welcome aboard Bouse!
I pondered all three thumpers before going the 450b route. It is a great round for hunting. You can run it fast and flat with 200gr bullets clocking out the tube at 2500fps or go big and slow, depeding upon what you want to hunt with it. I use it for deep woods/brush hunting where the odds of a shot beyond 75 yards are low. There are more range reports on loads that you can do here, already cut and tried, than almost anywhere else. Folks here are for the most part "friendly to a fault" and more than willing to advise on just about any aspect from experience, not just theory, though some of that abounds as well. We try to adhere to a zero troll tolerance also. No snarky comments. It is almost like a community of friends and that's getting harder to find thee days. More hunters than "Mall Ninjas". Ambiance aside, there are some sharp cookies here. We won't steer you wrong. I personally have loaded over 20 different bullets in this caliber and I find remarks on other forums that "We're so limited in bullet selection." to be rubbish. That's just other caliber fanboys being defensive of their particular choices. We love all thumpers, though the lion's share of the experience base here is with this caliber.
You will not go wrong with this caliber for hunting any creature in the continent, albeit, not at 300 or 7mm Mag distances. Whether you go with a factory rig or roll your own, choices have grown exponentially since I first got involved 7 years ago.
