Anyone tried Polymer80 Magazines?

Postby jkpq45 » Thu Jun 15, 2017 7:55 am

I tried a forum search to no avail--who's tried these for .450b?

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1018674025/polymer80-magazine-ar-15-50-beowulf-10-round-polymer

How many rounds did they hold?
Did they feed reliably?
Did they drop free when unloaded/load into the magwell easily when loaded?

Thanks,

I gotta say, that's the first product on the Midway site that didn't at least get one shill giving it a 5 star rating. Pretty bad when you can't get a single 5 star rating. The reviews did not sound encouraging. Pretty hard to beat the price/performance of the stainless steel mags. IIRC, there was one brand of polymer magazine that got a lot of praise here. Might have been the mags for the SIG-556.

EDIT: I think these are the ones that they are selling now, but they look different than the ones mentioned here a few years back. https://www.sigsauer.com/store/sig-sauer-polymer-magazine-30-rounds.html

Hoot, are the 20 rd (5.56) SS magazines preferred over the 30 rd (5.56) SS magazines for functionality in the .450b?

I'd really like the option of stuffing more than 8-9 rounds in a 20 rd 5.56 SS magazine under the bolt of the .450b build I'm planning.

Thanks!

Generally speaking, the SS 20's are preferred to the 30's for reliability reasons. My experience which has only been with 20 rd SS mags, has been that the 8-9 limit is hard to overcome. However, if you remove as much of the spring and still get the last 450b round to lift into place with a slight amount of force left, you will be able to get the most rounds in them and they will be less prone to feed problems. I've seen too many 5.56 mags with entirely too much spring in them for direct use as a 450b mag, without removing some of the spring. Be wary of buying 450b specific mags as many have dimples in them that restrict the maximum number of rounds they hold. I'm not exactly sure why they have them to tell you the truth. Perhaps keep the spring from flying out when the floorplate is removed. They can be "ironed out" with a little creativity. That's what most members do.

I, too, prefer the straight 20 round mags. I have had success with both steel and polymer. The straight wall 450BM rounds don't handle the curve in the 30 rnd mag very well, so if you load them up to max, you will have feed problems. My suggestion is to have a couple extra 20 round mags that will hold 7 450BM rounds and practice tactical reloads, if you think you will need the extra capacity.

I can't think of an actual hunting experience, where you will need more than 7 rounds - except for hunting hogs from a helicopter, maybe. Some states restrict mag capacity for hunting, and if your going after hogs on the ground, good luck having any still in range after the first two or three shots.
