gas port position on short barrels

or i guess a better question would be how much barrel length beyondthe gas port do you need to give reliable cycling?
ie: on a carbine gas barrel the port is ~7", would that function on a 9-9.5" barrel? or would you need a pistol gas port to reliably cycle that length barrel?
