New Ammo 2018?

Postby sbrGrendel » Tue Nov 21, 2017 2:04 am

I was doing some searching and came across what looks like a new load for the Thumper by Winchester. It appears to be 250gr Poly Tip Deer loading. In the 30-40.00 range. I guess we might get info on it before shot if not then it’ll be at shot.

Thinking of shot in Vegas I wonder what kind of protest there will be during it. JUst something I’ve been thinking about as it approaches.

I sure would like to see someone start to load the Barnes bullets in a factory loading. I don't have the time or the need to invest in $80 set of dies just to load for 9 days of Ohio deer hunting and 3 days of SC hogs. That's the only times I use my 450BM. Right now I'm just shooting Hornady Black 250gr.

a set of dies will let you load 225 ftx for under 40 cents per round if you catch them as blems/seconds at midway. which nudges the 450 into the plinker price per shot and quite a bit more gentle on the pocket.

that means its no longer limited to a 12 day a year gun for you if you want to play with it.

doesnt take a lot of reloads then to pay for a set of dies.

just some food for thought.

I'm surprised that Black Butterfly doesn't offer a 200gr XPB load as well. It has 31% more TKO than a 30-06 shooting the same weight bullet. I will be taking them hog hunting down in Texas this coming February, along with some Lehigh XD 220gr loads. Gotta see the latter in action!

I was interested in the 220gr Lehigh that Underwood loads as well. Any idea how these things would feed in an AR platform? They look like a nightmare but I've heard they feed fine. I go to SC for public land hogs in March every year. Those 220gr bullets look evil.

Shouldn't be much of a problem feeding. I am currently running 135gr Lehigh XD's, that are shorter and have a more blunt profile, don't have an issue with those feeding. Although, I gave Hoot a few and he did have a little trouble with feeding. I believe it had to do with the angle they sit at in the mags. Mine have the front sitting a little higher than what Hoot had.

IIRC, the issue was more of the luck of the draw with how they were oriented rotation wise. With a 4 blade pattern, there are four 90 degree quadrants. While about 80 degrees or rotation in each quadrant positioned those blades without issue, there was about 10 degrees where they lined up with the barrel extension cuts so that they jammed up against them. That breaks down to I believe is a 1 in 8 chance of a bad alignment. Again, IIRC, there are other factors like how the cartridges ride while waiting to be stripped and cycled into the chamber. A little more tilt one way or the other could impact the probability of a bad alignment. This was not a paid proof of design study, just some loose experimenting one evening with dummy rounds. All contributing factors considered, there is a possibility for a jam. The odds of it happening are however, more subject to additional study. In real life, I suspect that the shooter has very little chance of controlling the contributing factors aside from loading the rounds one by one. Most, if not all dangerous game hunters do not use autoloaders for a reason. A 1 in 8 chance of losing a deer because your second shot jammed while regrettable, is far less worthy of concern than a 1 in 8 chance of getting mauled by a wounded lion. ;)
