It must be a 200 grain. 70% x 200grain = 140 grain.

The two images are from the FTX Bullet Comparison article I did at the beginning of the Reloading for the 450b sub forum. Anyway, here's the same test with the 225 FTX:

Those two and the 250 FTX in the article were shot at close to point blank range. Just far enough away to avoid the back-splatter of water. :o

BuckEye, are you only shooting large "Trophy" hogs or any hog you can? I try to shoot 100 pound sows but I will shoot any hog I can. The boar I shot a week ago had a shield but the 250 grain FTX passed thru it with no problems. I really would like to try a copper bullet and I am hoping you do try the ones from Black Butterfly..I am a member of a hunt club and the land owner(timber company) has asked us to take more hogs off the property.. Our 3000 acre lease has a lot of wet lands, grass ponds and cypress heads. It is hard to access most areas and not good for spot and stalk. I have gone months with out seeing a single hog..then I get over run with them for a few weeks..I hope you have a fun and safe hunt with lots of shot opportunities.

When you think about it, passing through say 6 milk jugs of water. That's 12 layers of HDPE and the water. I've never dissected a hog to see the shield as we don't have that problem up here (yet), but those 12 layers of HDPE with a water brake in between each two, probably is a good test of penetration for a bullet with a soft ballistic tip.

Buckeye, I didn't realize that I failed to answer your question until just now. The first image was the 200gr FTX.

Hoot, thanks for posting your test results! Testing is fun and interesting but never cheap. I shot a big boar hog behind the shoulder 20 years ago with a 60 pound recurve using Bear SS Razorheads. I only got about 2 inches of penetration, arrow pretty much bounced off him. On the same hunt my buddy shot also shot a huge boar with a 80 pound compound bow with aluminum arrows, same story, no penetration, no dead hog..we concentrated on small boars and sows after that..I once shot a big boar with a 50 cal muzzleloader at 25 yards, he ran off, I only found a dozen drops of blood trailing him..a couple of days later my buddy shot him in the head with a 270. He said there was a pinkie finger sized hole in the hogs shoulder, we figured that his dead hog was the one I shot with the muzzle loader. Some shields are pretty thick and tough, some are barely there. I look forward to more Hog kills with my 450BM, each one will be a learning experience on the 450's effectiveness.

I took the plunge and bought some of the Black Butterfly 275gr Barnes XPB 450BM ammunition. I'll post some pics of how it shoots once I get it and we dig out of this snow we have here in eastern Ohio.

Having worked with both bullets, as far as I could tell, The 275's had the same front as the 200's, just a longer rear. I suspect that the same rule of effective velocity applies. Keep them above 1800 fps for big mushroom in soft to medium tissue hits. Less if they hit bone or possibly mature shield on the way in. The flip side of that opinion would be that if they don't mushroom, you have a better chance of a complete pass however. Personally, I'd rather leave the energy they came in with, inside the animal, as opposed to in the side of a nearby tree. Shock incapacitates them better than hemorrhage, but nothing beats a CNS hit. ;)

UPS just brought my box of 20 Black Butterfly 250 grain Copper "Tomahawk" bullets and Sample pack of five 275 grain Barnes bullets, Bang It was sold out of the 20 packs of the Barnes.. Both look like they will feed nicely, the Maker Tomahawk bullet look like they should open up to over an inch wide? I hope to try them out either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday afternoon..on hogs. Left to Right..Buffalo 240 JHC, Hornady 250 FTX, Black Butterfly 250 grain Tomahawk and BB 275 XPB Barnes. I am trying to find the most accurate factory round for my 16" 1-24 barrel that also preforms well on Deer and Hogs..really hoping the Barnes is the one

I went over to my hunt club yesterday to shoot at our 100 yard rifle range. I had previously sighted in 2 inches high at 100 yards with Hornady 250 FTX. I started off with a clean barrel and loaded 3 of the Black Butterfly 250 grain copper Tomahawk bullets. I shot two series of 3 rounds cleaning barrel after 3 shots, all hit 2 to 4 inches below center and half went left of center 1 -2 inches. I cleaned the barrel and let it cool down for 20 minutes, I then loaded and shot 3 of the Hornady 250 FTX, all were dead center 2 were 2 inches one was 3 inches high. I cleaned the barrel and let it cool then loaded and shot 3 of the Barnes 275 grain XPB, The Barnes shot the same as the Hornady 250 XPB a 1 1/2 group 2 inches above center.. I was happy with that and I still have 2 rounds of the 275 XPB to try out on a hog or two later this week. I will be getting a box or 2 of the XPBs, When they arrive I will shoot some at 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards. After looking around for some fresh hog sign I went back to the range and shot some of the 250 Tomahawks and some of the 240 JHC bullets I had, the 240 JHCs shot 1-4' high and nicely centered. So my 16" barrel liked the 275 XPBs and the 250 FTX bullets the best so far.
