Shot out to 300 yards today

First time shooting this far with the 450, and it was an experience! It shoots fairly flat to 200, but drops like a brick soon after. I was using a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 with the ballistic plex reticle. First bar on the reticle worked great at 200, but the second and third were hitting low at 300. The sweet spot was where the crosshairs start widening below the bars.

I hit 8” steel 4 out of 6 times when I figured out the reticle. Actually, I tried my 6.8 SPC first, and it was pretty easy to hit the 300 regularly with it. I’ve read here about the 450’s trajectory, but now I fully understand.

Yeah not many shoot that far with the 450B, I haven’t, and probably won’t. Glad to hear you were able to land most of your shots on an 8” target at that range.

Hadn’t planned to shoot at 300, but one buddy had an 18” 5.56 Noveske, and another had a 20” 6.5, and both told me I’d never hit the 300 yard steel with the 450, so I had to do it. I’ve shot 5.56, 6.8, and 7.62x39 AR’s at 300 yards, but the 450 was another ball game. It took a few shots (with a spotter) to see where it was hitting, but it’s definitely doable.

I think my pet load using the Barnes 275 grain bullet retains a little more energy at range but I haven't tested it out to 300y yet. I have only been shooting it at 25, 50 and 100 yards (crudely measured by paces.) I'd be happy to keep my shots closer as I have a beloved Nikon Scoped Ruger M77 in 7mm Magnum that sits in a place of honor behind the seat of the truck. I believe originally Jeff wanted to see a .44 Auto Mag. in the AR platform but was thrilled when Tim LeGendre (LeMag Firearms) came up with the .450 Thumper. It was always intended to harvest game from 250 yards in and was touted as far better stopper than the 5.56mm. (LeGendre's first .450 Thumper wasn't an AR by the way, it was an M1 Carbine, Jeff was thrilled!)

I point out that for years Jeff hunted (in Northern Arizona) with my Dad's Remington 660 in 6.5 Remington Magnum, (my Dad got one in .350 Remington Magnum but wouldn't let Jeff borrow it as he knew he'd probably never get it back.)

I had a Universal Vulcan (a pump action .44 Magnum carbine) that only had a 5 round magazine which Jeff found favor with. However it suffered from parts breakage (on the spring loaded pump forend) and was limited to 5 round magazines. http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_Un ... ulcan.html

My Dad traded off the .44 Mag. pump for a 1st model Ruger .44 Mag. semi auto carbine which came with a factory mounted peep sight. https://classic.gunauction.com/search/d ... um=7553808

I would have loved to have met Jeff Cooper! Thanks for the story, it was very interesting.

When I finished up at MCRD San Diego he surprised us by showing up to my graduation. He was a big hit!

I’ve read a bunch of Jeff Coopers writings. He was strong willed, and didn’t BS. Definitely not politically correct!
