Low Down on Mags

So besides the high dollar Mags specifically marketed by Bushmaster for the 450, what else will work? Will a standard 20rd GI mag work if the follower was ground down a little? Same thing but using a 30rd. mag. From what I have read and saw the follower is the only difference and I think some lite work with a dremel would make it usable but the bolt may not stay back which I would be ok with. The special mags are always out of stock and I'm hoping some of the many existing mags I have for the AR will work.

midway has 450 mags for 30 bucks. i also purchased a single shot follower from midway which i glued to the top of a 30 round ar mag follower that i ground flat. this gave me ten round capacity. i used a steel 30 round pro-mag steel magazine. it works ok. i mostly use my 5 round mags.

Thanks. Any clue on the best place to get them that don't want so much for shipping?

You may have to watch using the standard GI mags.. They are aluminum and the feed lips may bend more than wanted.. the BM mags are stainless steel.. I know you can buy 30 rd stainless mags, but not sure about 20 rds though..

20 rd Pmags can be easily converted (there is a post on here with pics describing the procedure) - You have to grind down the follower and remove the ridge in the front of the body.

Try these guys. I got mine in a few days ago. Two mags and a connector.
They were on sale but I dont know about right now.
I was able to stuff 11 cartridges in mine. (Didn't try 12)
They are the Sig mags.

The tempered stainless steel 20-round mags like the AR Stoner house brand that Midway sells work great with a quick dremel touch, squashed lips and a ground down Magpul Gen4 follower, or actual single stack follower. The added advantage they bring to the table over thicker walled mags of softer material is additional COL capacity due to the thinner walls. I have a Bushmaster mag and an AR Stoner modified mag with an actual Bushmaster follower and both run like a Swiss watch.

I take standard 20 round mags and grind-out the middle of the follower with a dremel tool that has a similar radius as a .450 cartridge. This will allow the cartridge to sit in the middle of the follower [rather than be pushed to one side in a 'staggered' fashion for the standard .223 Rem.] Then I simply apoxy a toothpick on the opposite side of the follower so the .450 cartridge is supported by; 1. remaining plastic on one side, and 2. a toothpick glued in on the other. This does a GREAT job of centering the .450 Bushmaster cartridge in the 'hollowed-out' center of the follower and feeding is absolute...and CHEAP!!

I have three of these modified 20 round magazines, and they feed as well as the two factory .450 Bushmaster magazines, for a lot less money.

Can you just buy the follower?
