Building a .450BM upper?

Postby BWilliams » Sun Apr 10, 2011 10:12 pm

Hey guys ... first post, been doing lots of lurking and research.

I'm interested in building a .450 AR, but here in NY, we're still under an exact copy of the old '94 AWB, so any upper I got with a threaded muzzle (ie, the Bushmaster factory upper) would need a brake pinned on to "remove the threads" and be legal. While I don't have a problem with that (seeing as my 5.56 tactical AR has a pinned brake), I would rather just avoid that issue all together, and get a barrel without any threads.

I had looked into having Ballistic Advantage cut me a barrel without threads, but a few sites online have mentioned that they no longer make .450BM barrels. I'm planning on giving Bushy a call to see if they will sell the .450 receiver (with the wider ejection port and the .450BM marking) for me to build off of if I can source a barrel, but that leaves me with the question of WTF to do with the barrel itself. So, a few questions:

1. Is there any company that makes .450BM barrels that I could have make a custom barrel without threads?
2. Failing (1.), I'll likely just order a factory Bushy upper and deal with the fact that I have to worry about the muzzle. But I'd like to know, what's the lowest-profile muzzle brake/compensator I can get in .450?

Man, I really feel for you guys in NYS. I don't know why Bushmaster
Wouldn't fix you up with a NYS legal barrel. I bet that since they moved to
NYS they will have to deal with it in some instances anyway.

Yeah, there's absolutely nothing that they offer that's ban-compliant out of the box in .450 ... only option is to get the upper and pin the brake once it gets here. Thus the idea of just rolling my own if I can source a non-threaded barrel and the .450BM upper.

Thanks for the welcome. :)

it shouldn't be a problem to cut off the the threads, your local gunsmith or buddy with a lathe or a mill, should be able to get it done.

Whatever you decide, don't go and grind off the threads
on a barrel. Just the thought is causing me to have a
post traumatic stress episode simular to the one i had
When i saw a video of Austrailia chopping up thousands
of firearms when they banned and confiscated them
back 20 years ago.

Sorry, Taxas but I'm going to tell him what I did :).
I filed off the threads and got a comp. from Ross. Welded the comp on the barrel and as soon as I get the Duracote I ordered from Midway I'll spray the barrel and comp. May be overkill but especially here on LI we are having such a crackdown on AR's that I felt this was the best way to be complient. Your call though.

How come you filed off the threads if you got a compensator?

If you decide to go with the barrel from BM then here is a video you can use to open up the receiver for the brass to extract. Sorry it is a bit too long.

 i'm gonna have a "thread protector" made to replace the izzy during hunting season. :? wouldn't that be an easier solution? :| then just have it tack welded instead of pinned. just sayin' 8-)
