Ok, so I really don't know a whole lot on these calibers, but they seem interesting. I'm wanting to start my next build, but I just don't know which. Here's some things I'm looking for...

Want to hunt with it
AR15
Ammo availability (currently don't reload)
Longer range shooting, I've read that most of these calibers can get 600 yds... But I still want knockdown power.
Would like to build upper myself (300 ossm is out on this one)

I like the ossm, but would like to build my upper so I can have a better feel of my gun. I've read that the grendel can go 1000 yds, but can you build your own upper?

Anyway, help me out guys. Looking for facts and opinions. Thanks.

Would a 6.5 Grendel fit and feed with no issues on a standard AR15 lower? This round has caught my attention.

Yes, it does. At least mine does. And talk about an ego boosting caliber. Mine has to be the most accurate AR platform caliber I own and it has been right out of the box, delivering .25-.5 MOA accuracy. I built mine from parts, starting with a 24" AR Stoner (E.R. Shaw) barrel and bolt from Midway. When I'm having a bad week testing some new load, I haul out the Grendel upper and shoot a box of ammo and suddenly, life is good. Add to that, a lots of folks successfully hunt CXP2 game with it and that's just icing on the cake. With 1" groups at 200 yards, even with modest wind, it's great for meat hunters like me. Catch 'em moseying around and it's an easy head shot. Catch 'em on the move and it's a reliable body shot as well. Seriously, it's like hunting with a laser pointer.

Folks who ask me about getting their first AR rig, I advise to skip the .223 and go straight to the Grendel.

6.5 Grendel all the way. I have it in my TC and love it, and i will be building a 6.5 Grendel upper when i get back home. It will be a great Medimum Game and Varment rifle.

i dont know if i would do it but LaRue (LaRue Tactical http://www.LaRue.com ) took an ELk at 400 yds with his Grendel upper.

Tell me more about the round and how does it fit in a standard AR mag ?
Bullet choices? FPS? COAL? Knock down compared to rounds like 308, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag.
30-30?

There is also the 6.5 that I've been thinking about! The 6.5/.243 WSSM

Now wouldn't you think it would be easier on the brass to stretch the .256 (25 WSSM) up to .264, than the .243 (243 WSSM) up to .264? go figure... Image

Here is my $ .02 :

I was all hot and bothered about the 6.5G for many months. But, as I kept researching it, I came to understand how the ammo is very expensive, and a .223 will do what a 6.5 will do at reasonable distances. The 6.5G will reach farther, but is at the mercy of a puff of wind at those distances.

I'll just save my pennies for Tim's .308 semi-auto upper.

I am gonna take a bunch of stuff to read tonight and do some research. So far, it looks like ammo isn't that plentiful and prices are a little higher than I want to pay. But will get read-up. I too, am itching to see what the mad scientist shows us when he finally walks out of that smoke filled lab.
