I agree with WC on the limits of the 6mm on big game. That's why I have a 450 Bushmaster, 7mm Rem Mag and a 30-06. I have no intentions of trying to take animals that big with the 6.5 Grendel. I am building this AR with the intentions of taking Scrappie Texas Deer, coyotes, bobcats and 70-200 pound class pork chops on the hoof. It will also serve as a youth rifle for a spindley 15 year old to use for deer season. (He will be using a 4-5 round mag). No spray and pray. I do have confidence that using Barnes solids, this cartridge can quickly dispatch mobile squads of ham at long range and I with the 450 Bushy will be there for Hogzilla.
And I am still craving to see what WC is cooking in the smoker. I will gladly build another lower.

Dittos here, Dawg. Speaking of alternate calibers, anyone here know what's up with the .30 Rem AR cartridge?

Just to keep the record straight, I never claimed that the 6.5 x 55 was a good "300 yard" moose cartridge, only that IMO more moose have been killed with this cartridge than any other. That is because the Swedes and Norwegians have been shoot moose with the 6.5s since 1894, and despite the availability of many other options in Scandinavia today, the 6.5 x 55 is still one of the most popular hunting cartridges in the north woods. WC spoke the truth when he said the 6.5 Grendal is not the 6.5 x 55, maybe similar to one of the 1894 18" carbines loaded with 120 grainers, but it can't hold a candle to the 6.5 x 55 loaded with a 140 grainer over a case full H 1000 out of that 29" 1 in 7 twist barrel.

The 260 Remington and the 6.5 Creedmore can match the performance, at higher pressure, but currently they're limited to the AR 10 platform.

IMHO, it's doomed to die from COL-itis. ;)
Good idea, but severely hamstrung by the AR15 magazine dimensions as any bullet heavier than about 125gr will have to rob the case of powder capacity in order to fit the 2.26 COL. That's assuming your bullet's ogive is not below the mouth, which would be the case with most .308 bullets that sport a decent BC.

My Uncle has a 6.5X55 in a Bolt action. It's killed a bunch of deer and hogs. Nice little rifle. I almost bought one after I saw his, but for some reason that I can't recall the deal fell through. That was back in 97'. But now, it is I that will have a nice little 6.5 to show him!

My Grendel so far. It still needs a stock, Carrier and firing pin and a Ross brake.

Finally got a few boxes of 6.5 Grendel ammo so I put my Grendel on the 450 Bushmaster Lower and had a brief shooting session on my pistol range getting the scope on paper. This is going to be a fantastic coyote rifle! Shot a tin can that was in front of that 7/16" steel plate and Holy Cow! It almost blew all the way through that steel plate! I was shooting the Wolf 120 grain MPT.
So now if I can just get my stock and a Ross Brake, this rifle will be finished.
I did find a 9/16-24 thread protector so I can protect the threaded muzzle until Ross gets back in the saddle.

That's a good looking rifle, I'm sure it will be quite the tack driver!

Thanx for the compliment! It's been a real experience to build. The hardest part has been having to wait for parts to ship. Everything else has been a blast! Everyone should build at least one AR from the ground up.
Once finished, this is going to be one of the sweetest rifles I own, (next to my Thumper of course).
Once I finish it, I will do a presentation video with highlights of the build.
