Overgassed? Pic Inside

Postby ebusa » Thu Sep 15, 2011 10:24 pm

Hey Guys,

I have no feeding or ejections problems so far with my thumper, but noticed I do have some wear on the deflector. I've only put about 100 rounds through the rifle. After doing some researching this looks like a possible symptom of being overgassed??

I'm just wondering if anyone else has this same wear? I really haven't paid attention to the angle at which the spent case it thrown, but will test this weekend. I'm just trying to see if this is normal, or if I need to take steps to correct?? Not sure what I could do to fix ihe issue or if I shoudl be concerned?

Thanks!

I haven't heard of that being a symptom of overgassing, but I guess it could be. I'll have to look at my 450, but every 223 I've used has those marks. That deflector is supposed to keep the brass from coming back and hitting a left hand shooter.

Edit- I forgot to mention that I often get dented case mouths from 223 and 300 Whisper, from hitting the deflector.

I don't know if that's right. I have close to, if not over 1k rounds through mine and it hasn't broken through the anodizing yet. Not a lot you can do about it now though.

I just checked my rifles, a Colt and Bushmaster in 223, 300 Whisper and the 450 Bushmaster all have similar marks in the finish to some extent or another. The only one that doesn't have any marks on the side is my slick sided 6.8.

I think these marks are normal. I have them on both my 223 and 450 uppers. They are small (<1/4") thin vertical lines at the base of the deflector. They could be scratches in the finish or brass that has rubbed off as a spent cartridge left the chamber and hit the deflector. I mislayed my camera or I would have taken and posted a photo.

I think mine is overgassing,it has ripped rims with reloads that don't look overpressured. If I go to midloads it seems to do OK.I haven't had much time with it yet but I might have to put some sort of gas adjustment system on it.I like overgas for downloads but not good for getting max velocity. The rifle has gobs of power so using mid level reloads would be OK anyway.I haven't got swiping or brass flow of any sort just a couple ripped rims and a couple that almost ripped off.The reloads used 36 to 38 grains Lil Gun and that should be well within pressure limits. The bolt is opening too soon for some reason.Mine is a 20 inch barrel and I think it would be better with a longer gas system.
