I've always liked shorter barrel rifles going back to my first a 8mm Mauser cut to 18" in 1968....first year a 450 Bushmaster could be used in Michigan Limited Zone only rifle I could find was a AR-15 with 20" so it was used and but my eye was on a 16" when it was available....
I use a 308 Win. in the UP with a 18" barrel....lot easer using in a box blind....

do you have a source/link for this test ?

It was in a review of the Ruger Ranch (16.1"). I can't find the review, but here's a couple data points.

This reviewer tested 2190ish FPS out of the 16" barrel on the Hornady round rated at 2200fps.

These guys show a 2% drop in FPS going from 22inch barrel to 16.1" on their 250gr Lehigh Defense

Good Luck!

Found the 1% source. https://www.americanrifleman.org/conten ... fle-ranch/

“ So, the only load I had on hand to work with was Hornady's Black label 250-gr. FTX with a listed velocity of 2200 fps. (using a 20" barrel) for a muzzle energy of 2686 ft. lbs. To see how this load performed out of the shorter 16.12" barrel, 10 consecutive rounds were fired across a Lab Radar chronograph. The velocity average was 2184 fps. for a muzzle energy level of 2648 ft. lbs. That's just about a 1 percent drop in velocity with only a 38 ft. lb. loss of energy with a 3.88" shorter barrel. I see nothing to complain about here.”

Most members shooting Black Box out of a 20" bolt action have reported MV's north of 2200. About 100 fps faster than those with 16" bolt actions. Truth be told, they're both lethal as hell! Its a matter of personal preference. FWIW, my 20" AR platform shoots them a little north of 2200 when its not cold out. I say that because i haven't clocked it on my LabRadar when its cold out. Just going on how ball powders generally behave compared to most stick powders.

Enjoy!
