First build need help with barrel

Hello, I am new to this forum and the 450. Have plans on building a hunting gun for lower Michigan. I have a savage model 10 in 308 as a donor and ready to order my barrel. Planning on ordering from mcgowen just need help with length and twist. I plan on shooting factory ammo no hand loads. It seems like a lot of talk of 16" or 20" and 1:16 or 1:24. My question is has any one gone with a 18" and if so what loss is there to the 20" and I see mcgowen offers a 1:18 twist. With some saying 1:16 is to fast would 1:18 be better or should I stick with 1:24. Thanks.

What bullet weight are you planning to use? Factory ammo shoots best with a 1 in 24 twist. Check out he reading on Tromix and Bartz barrels. :D :D :D :D :P

look up Precision Rifle here in Michigan, they post here too. they had some McGowen barrels on GB awhile back, but were longer, (24-26") but they might have something shorter on hand in stock.

My bolt gun is a 16t, 200gr Barnes the lightest I've shot in it, handled them fine.

So after reading that looks like The barrel to get would be a mcgowen 20" with 1:24 twist

That barrel should do well.
