Well last month I told that I had purchased a Ruger #1 in 450 Bushy. Said I would send in a report on the firearm after getting a chance to shoot it. I had a hip replacement and was finally able to get out. Almost everyone complained about Ruger putting the rifling at 1/10. Here are the results on my Ruger. The bottom three holes on the head are mine at 25yds. The three holes a little higher are my sons. Using a Trijicon 1-4x24 30mm scope with green triangle. This reticle is not for target shooting, but is fantastic in the deer woods. I have used this scope for the last six seasons for deer on my 450 Bushy AR, a Contender 44 Mag and a Contender 45-70. Always loved the Ruger #1 and grabbed one up when I saw them in the 450.
Tried to submit photo about 10 times had to reduce to nothing, hopefully it can be seen.
Enjoy

seeing photo bucket went stupid, I'm playing with a new site Hoot recommended.

I had a slight issue with my #1 450B in a previous post with the fired case hitting the safety and not fully ejecting. Apparently this has been a hit/miss issue with #1's in general.

So I peeled her down yesterday and filed the front back then radiused it off, problem fixed. Also flattened out the front and back some so she don't look like a ski slope.

for a 10T barrel, this thing is amazing me with the factory and first reloads thru it.

this was a 275gr Barnes stretched out over a big dose of 300MP, no signs of pressure. I need to break the chrono out one of these days and see where things are.

Ran into Randy from Randy Hunting Ceter today, said he got some regular #1's, blued, walnut, with sights, no brake.

Didn't ask a.price, but guessing they won't last long.

Bmt85-
You're likely correct in your reasoning about what the Ruger engineers were thinking in specifying a 1:10 twist barrel. Your logic is supported by noting that it comes with a factory-threaded muzzle suitable for a suppressor.

Krieger makes 1:10twist 450 barrels, so there's a market of some sort for them. Playing with the barrel twist calculator at jbmballistics.com makes it apparent that a 1:16 twist will not stabilize very long, very slow bullets. With shorter bullets at higher velocities the 1:10 twist will be OK with good bullets.

Took two nice bucks this past season with the Ruger #1 in 450 Bushy. Here are a few pics. Took the first one at about 30yds he was a little more than quartering away so I had to place the shot pretty far back. Went in, and went through the stomach then took out part of the the liver and the jacket (no lead) lodged in the far side rib cage. The other buck 9 days later was about 50yds broadside. Both dropped in their tracks. Looking at the side of the first one it looks like when the bullet went through the stomach (which was full to the point of bulging) some of the contents (grass, acorns and corn were thrown back out the entrance hole, like you see when a bullet goes through ballistic gel. first buck a small 6pt, second buck is weird and very cool about a 10pt?

Handgunner,
Did you take both those deer with Hornady Factory Ammo?

Yes I did. I am working up some loads for the 200gr FTX. I had a Smith 460 and the performance was fantastic on deer. But after seeing what the factory rounds did I may just load up the 250's. I always thought the 250 was a little bit heavy for deer. But these FTX rounds expand fast and penetrate great. When I was using my 44 and 454 revolvers I shot 180 and 200gr and had great success with them. So I thought I would do the same with the Bushy. After the last three deer seasons (first two with the 450 AR)and taking five bucks I am rethinking it. With the higher speed of the 450 over my revolvers, not sure bullet weight is a factor for me any longer.
Thanks for the interest.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all who celebrate it.
