where to start?

Postby nast16 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 3:29 pm

hi everybody, just joined up! I am interested in building a 450 bolt rifle on a Savage action, I've built some 80% AR's and have done some work to old surplus rifles so I consider myself handy, but I am a little stumped. I've searched the threads and other forums, and maybe I'm missing it, but what would the ideal donor rifle caliber be? I'm more interested in an Axis to keep the cost lower, but if I save my pennies I could go with a model 10 or 12. I would assume something like a .308 would be best, but nothing I've read mentions the caliber that the rifle started out as. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome aboard OM!

I don't have a 450b bolt action. I already have two semi-autos in that caliber. I do have Two Savage Model 12's that share multiple caliber barrels. IMHO, hurt once, enjoy a lifetime and get a Model 12 in .308. There are many calibers that use that bolt face. Assuming you have a wrench, changing a barrel (caliber) takes maybe 40 minutes, including removing the action from the stock and putting it back. A go/no-go set is all you need and many calibers share the same set. The Model 12's have about the highest resale value also.

ask and you shall receive! I appreciate it, thanks so much! Once I get all the hardware, I'll put some pics up. I'm planning on ordering a Rhineland Arms barrel soon and I'll put my gun shop guy on the lookout!

I just did a 45 Raptor on a 12 308 scout, been flawless so far. I'm also impressed with their accustock.

Cabelas had a smoking sale on 12's awhile back, dunno if it's still on or not but was rebate from savage on top of that.

Just checked them out, the deal is still going, but the rifle would be backordered. might be a couple weeks before it ships, but I've had backorders take FOREVER before hahaha

Marlin xs7, 308 win works. Found one for $225 with a scope. Put a MGM 24in, 20t in the original stock with an easy bit of sanding.

I'll look into them too. I was trying to finish up a project on an old Enfield I have and ran into some hangups, so the 450 project will start a little later. I was also given a nice lathe this weekend by a friend that needs some work, so that may open up some other possibilities once I get it up and running
