Savage pre-fit barrel suggestions wanted

Postby CJP1 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 5:25 am

I have a Savage model 16 270 WSM. I’m wanting to make it into a switch barrel rifle with a 450 BM. I’m looking for a moderately priced SS 22” barrel. I don’t want to break the bank if at all possible. Also what contour should I look at? I don’t want it to be too heavy. Thanks for your help.

I have a stainless Apache Gunworks barrel on my 700, Jim makes them for a Savage also, shoots great. He normally uses 16t Green Mtn blanks.

Satern Barrels will make them, have one of their 45 Raptor barrels on a Savage that’s been awesome.

I’m sure McGowen would make one and thought awhile back someplace posted here they were making barrels, but I can’t find them at the moment.

you'll also need the bolt head swapped, and does that WSM use a fixed ejector or pin type one in the bolt face?

I believe it is a pin type ejector. I knew that I also needed the smaller head for my bolt. Are there any suggestions as to where I could pick one up?

Midway, PTG, ebay, Savage Shooters forum. Some are complete, some stripped.

CJP1-
McGowan's barrel web site: http://mcgowenbarrel.com/.

On the home page is a link to Savage pre-fits, which include a 450B barrel. Have a look. Unfortunately for your specs, it's chrome-moly, not SS.

My smith is a pretty picky sort, but has been impressed with the McGowen barrels he's installed recently. I've been pleased with the one I had installed on my Model 70 in 2011.

I have been looking at the ER Shaw and the X-Caliber barrels. I have a ER Shaw barrel already , but know nothing about the X-Caliber.Has anyone out there used one and what did you think of it?
I also found a bolt head for a .308 Win case at The Gun Shack. Thy also have all the parts for it so I won't have to change them out every time I change calibers. It said it was for a small firing pin. I don't know what size firing pin is in my 270WSM bolt. And is that length or diameter?

I was mistaken about the ejector. It is fixed and not the pin type. Now I'm not so sure that I can use the WSM reciever for the conversion to 450BM. Does anyone here know if it is possible to find a slotted head for a fixed ejector for the 308 Win diameter rim?

Check PTG, they list custom made bolt heads. I don't know if that wsm head has a long shank or not.

Also check out savage shooters forum, those guys know savages better then the factory does!!

I think that I'll hold off on the switch barrel idea as the price for parts needed have to be custom made. Once I get my new Boyds stock pillared and V-Blocks bedded I'll take my RAR to the range for group testing.
