16” Ruger vs 25” CVA muzzle velocity

Postby CJP1 » Sat Sep 08, 2018 12:29 pm

My buddy has a CVA Hunter with a 25” barrel and I have the 16” barrel on my RAR. I loaded up some 240gr Hornady XTP Mags over 37gr of L-G and CCI SR Mag primers. I put my Magneto Speed chronograph on both of our rifles. His CVA was 130 FPS faster than my RAR. I had heard that too long of a barrel started to slow the bullet down but not in this case.

gmstack,
The CVA had a MV of 2482 fps and my Ruger had a MV of 2349 fps.

Lil Gun burns past peak around 16" with 250 FTX bullets. That's not to say that the remaining but dropping pressure won't still contribute to more velocity. Far exceeds the loss due to bore friction. That's more of an issue with long barreled, 22 BR rimfire barrels. In their case, the main benefit from the longer barrel is it stabilizes the velocity ES, which is real important when you're trying to put a .224 bullet consistently inside a .375 ring at 50 yards, while having to re-aim every shot and settle down to read the wind, against the clock. My other passion ;)

That's not a whole lot for 9" of extra barrel, but as Hoot noted Lilgun reaches peak pressure pretty quick. You might see some bigger gains with a slower burning powder. But that 240gr doing 2300+ is gonna hurt whatever it hits period.

how was accuracy for you guys??

Al,
I havent had much trigger time lately so my accuracy wasn't so good but my buddy's was 1/2" at 50 yards.

I’d like to see what happens when you run a stout load of say 296, or something else that’s slower.
Good info though.

All bets are off on my reloads. Just found out that my Pact scale and or dispenser are way off. I loaded up average load for my sons 270 Win. I shot 2 rounds and both had flattened primers and had worked part way out of the primer pocket. The real kicker is that Pact no longer has parts for them so they can’t repair them. I took a sample of 8 of my loaded rounds and they ranged from right on to .6" over charged. Looks like I'll be pulling the other 88 rounds apart to check all of my loads for the correct charges.
