Progress hit s snag

Postby wvcruffler » Sun May 01, 2011 3:02 pm

As many of you suggested, we have hit a snag with the OD of the barrel blank. It is 1.00 and the size of the shank won't allow the smith the screw it down onto the receiver. So, would a locking ring system alleviate this issue? Anyone know a source of the instructions to make a locking ring setup for a mauser?

This is a 91 mauser, which largely has small ring threads and a slightly longer shank
.980 diameter. x 12 TPI, ..715 Length ish

by locking ring, you thinking a barrel nut like a Savage?

I'm clueless to Mausers, 700's, 70's, I've done a bunch, but never a Mauser.

Phil-
Rather than a Savage-like barrel nut, how about making a sleeve that fits pretty tightly to the barrel exterior, and silver-soldering it in place. The outside diameter where it turns up against the action could be about 1.2", and then turned with a nice taper contour at the front to match the barrel diameter. If the sleeve is long enough, I suspect the silver solder would hold it against considerable torque in drawing the barrel into the action.

I'll check with my smith about this, and about the barrel nut idea.

Good luck.

Edited to add: This is not a good idea. See next post.

Phil-
I should have checked before writing the above. Silver soldering would require too much heat on the barrel and would result in scale formation in the bore, ruining the barrel. I'll check further on the barrel nut idea. Sorry.
