Lil Gun & 300gr XTP Mag Bullets

Postby randyf » Mon Nov 19, 2018 5:27 pm

I am sure it is listed somewhere??

I bought some Hornady 300gr XTP Mag bullets and have Lil Gun powder on hand.

I have seen load data from 25gr to 38 gr..........

Just wondered how much Lil Gun others are using with the 300gr bullets/

Thanks! ;)

Well, I don’t have my Hornady manual near me, but looking at hodgdon’s load data online, it looks like 25gr, up to 27gr with a 300gr Swift. Lil gun is going to be too fast for optimal results with a 300gr bullet, but should still work.

Due to lack of response , I did some more research on my own........I ended up loading 31grs of Lil Gun with the 300gr XTP Mag bullets.

Went to the range today and was happy with the results. :D

I had the best results with 28.2 and 28.7 gr of Lil Gun under the 300 XTP/MAG. I was starting to get sticky extraction when I got to 31 gr, not bad but enough to not continue upward.

Loading them into the lands (2.26 COL), I've gotten them up to 2200 fps in a 1:24 20" AR platform but the signs said maximum safe pressure. I forget if I was using W296 or 300 MP but it definitely was not Lil Gun. I'm surprised that the Hornady manual shows maximum velocity as having been achieved with Lil Gun and not a slower powder. I will not give the charge weight as I'm concerned some speed demon newbie will start there instead of starting lower and doing the requisite workup. With as many different barrels out there as there are now, one size definitely does not fit all. A lot different than back when there were only 16" and 20", 1:24 barrel choices.
