100yd vs 300yd load developing

Postby Cutright » Sun Aug 09, 2020 3:47 pm

Excuse me if this has been addressed somewhere but I have been unable to find it. I was wondering if there is any advantage of doing load testing at 300 yards (or 200) as opposed to the 100 yd standard

Paper punching at 300 is definitely doable but, energy would be sorely lacking due to the poor sectional density of the bullets so would not be very humane hunting. 200 is a more realistic hunting distance. I've been playing with 400 grain JSPs in my BM. they're resized 45-70 bullets to .452" and may have enough oomph to score on game at 300.

At the further for bore size ranges of the 450B,I would suggest going with a lighter more aerodynamic (higher B.C.) bullet.
Slow and heavy, light and fast, the terminal energy will somewhat equal out. My pick would be a max of 300gr bullets. --- SAWMAN

I wasn’t looking for a recipe so much as just a question of finding the most accurate load. Is there any advantage of testing loads at a farther distance over the usual 100

I'd go to 200yds, should have about 8" of drop if I remember right.

if you were doing load development for a long range precision cartridge - probably yes there would be.

for a 200 yd and under hunting cartridge that lobs flying softballs.... meh.

remember... we're talking about a cartridge that a touching cloverleaf group is ~1 MOA.

time and place and all that.

THAT SAID - theres nothing wrong with PROVING a load that you've developed at 100 yds at longer distances, just to make sure it holds true. but i still see no reason to do initial load testing at distances beyond 100 yards.

YMMV

Thank you for weighing in. I was also wondering if there were advantages on my bottleneck cartridges too and you helped me out so thanks again
