what bullet and what load to start

Postby longrangedog1000yd » Thu Jul 26, 2012 7:19 pm

looking over a lot of post here there seems to be a lot of difference in how accurate a load shoots out of the 450b, i need somewhere to start, i want a heavy factory bullet(dont want to resize them) dont need to be the fastest wolud prefer accurecy over speed, for hog/deer 150yds would be a long hot around here, mostly 50 to 100 a lot even closer, what would be your choice for a 300gr + bullet and what powders to start load work?

I know you're gung-ho on bullets above 300gr, but the 275gr Barnes XPB ahead of 42gr of Lil Gun shoots consistent groups less than 1" at 100 yards and come out of the barrel at just over 2200fps. They're not a cheap bullet, but you sure get what you paid for. Otherwise there's few hogs and deer that the 250gr bullets won't drop like a cinch pipe. Those blue tips on sale at Midway right now, having a bonded core, should hold up well on hogs. If I wasn't already overflowing with regular Hornady 250gr, I'd be on them like spots on dice. I'm still considering buying some and selling my regular Hornady 250s.

You can still pick up those blue tips. They still had some in stock this AM. Two boxes would run you about $54 if you use basic USPS shipping. Stock# 151908 blemished. @ Midwayusa.com

yea i kinda want a big bullet, i shoot 220's out of my 300rum and it's a hammer, but with a 26" varmint barrel it aint really handy to move with,so the 450b;s 20" barrel should be a lot better to hit and move and supply enough to avoid a lot of tracking,im not a barnes fan, just never had real good accuracy with them in 5.56 or 7.62, but in wheel guns from .357 to .454 ive had great luck with hornady xtps, i wouldn't be opposed to a 250 to 275gr bullet as long as it does the job, swift makes a 265gr A frame in .452 might be a good compromise

I broke down and ordered a couple of boxes. That's just too good a deal to pass up. I'll sell two boxes of my Hornady 250gr FTX's to offset the purchase in the Market Place sub-forum.

Accuracy had been quite good with the barnes bullets with the 450 bushmaster. come to think about it, the new barnes bullets, (tsx) is about all ishoot out of my hunting rifles now. Accuracy has been to notch and they put a hurting on deer and elk! But to each their own.

I couldn't resist the Midway offer either, even though I just stocked up on 225's, 250's and 300's on their last blem sale. Four boxes of blue tips on the way. Now will anyone who doesn't reload sell me your brass. I am offering $.25 per case plus shipping. I have already had some come in. PM me!
