i have used the cci magnum small rifle primers in my 450. Didn't notice much of a difference from the REM 7 1/2.

I've had the Gunny chasing Primers a bunch just lately, in the 450LM project. He has some interesting observations, if we can get him to opine..

Primer?... I’ve learned a lot! W.C. has me looking at every detail of every shot. Some powders benefit others do not. All things being equal 2.08 case, 230 fmj,.466 side crimp .473 taper. Here’s some examples.

Burn Rate 69. LiL Gun. 64grns.cci#34, 2707fps.
Fed. 215, 2722fps. +15

Burn Rate 72. W296 63grns cci#34, 2919fps.
Fed.215, 3000fps+81

Burn Rate 76. IMR4227 57grns cci#34, 2673fps
Fed. 215, 2775fps+102

Burn Rate 84. A1680 68grns cci#34, 2526fps
Fed. 215, 2839fps+313

What I find the most interesting is the benefit that 1680 gets from the Mag primer. There's food for thought! Of course, you're working with a longer powder column than the regular 450b. Still might re-open my interest in 1680 with 300 grainers, which I've stopped beating as that horse is dead. That's with Rem 7 1/2. Gotta see if I have any Mag small rifle primers. It's kind of an oxymoron. ;)

This is good stuff Gunny!

A footnote to gunnut's post:

The CCI #34 primer is the CCI LR #250 Mag primer with a harder cup with "NATO sensitivity". LINK to CCI page

The Federal 215 is Federal's LR mag primer, and is pretty "hot". Supposedly Federal designed it in response to Weatherby's request for a primer that reliably would ignite powder in the large 378WB case. The techs at Hornady will insist that the WIn LR Mag primer is a bit "hotter" than the Fed 215.

Next step is to open up the gas port. Get the semi auto working! :D ........... I need some more recoil relief before we get into the heavies ;)

So who knows what the hottest reported Small Rifle Mag primer brand is? I don't use the hard cup (mil) primers.
