new to the forum and the 450, but not rifles or reloading.....I have a couple questions for OP ? are you having any pressure signs at 40 grains or above of Lil'Gun ? Hornady has max below 39 grains. I have some loaded rounds I just did with 40 grains of Lil Gun with the Hornady 250 XTP's for a Ruger Ranch in 450 and now I'm a little skeptical if I may have loaded them too hot....I have seen other info on line that 37-37.5 is about max ? Thanks in advance....

Welcome aboard drt4lfe!

I'm not the OP but QuickLoad models that load up to 42gr without exceeding recommended chamber pressure and QuickLoad tends to err on the side of caution. Your 40gr loads should be fine. At the time when TSD did those loads, I believe he was running a 1:24 twist barrel, not a 1:16 twist barrel. That may or may not be a variable worthy of concern though. Perhaps when you're up near the max load, but in all likelihood not at 40gr.

Like Hoot said. The 40.0 load should be fine. I am the OP and I've been shooting 40.0 grains in a lot of my current 250 Grain bullet loads and the Ruger American and my New Englander single shot both like the load very much even at 1:16 twist. I've decided that for most of my 250 Grain choices, the 40.0- 40.5 grain charges are going to be my go-to.

have you ever tried lighter bullets like the hornady 185's normally used for 45acp loads ?

I've done both the 185gr all copper and 160gr all copper range reports. The 185's weren't bad but in both cases, there's just too little bullet to seat down into the case. Tough holding them back until the powder really gets cooking. IIRC, they were more of a pattern than a group. The sweet zone starts at 200gr.

EDIT: In all fairness, both bullets I tried were the Copper Only Projectiles made by General Bullets. Their performance, or lack of it, could be unique to the brand, but my gut feeling is not. Definitely would not try it with FMJ's as thery're even more shorter than the COP hollow points.

Thanks, I did not think the light bullets would be a good choice, but you never know till you try....I only loaded five of them so if they don't shoot worth a crap then I did not waste much....

Keep in mind that my experiences have all been at the hand of the AR 15 450b, not a bolt action or single shot.
