That explains it. Remember when I shot my 230 grain FMJs out of my single shot 20”, I was getting 2600-2700 FPS and pretty spooky pressure signs, failures to eject and shooting about 8” high? That 1:16 twist is raising pressure and the lack of a gas system is adding velocity too. Now I’m wondering what his pressure signs look like.

None. I read on here and my cousin uses 40 gr lil gun with 275 xpb I. Their AR. I couldn't I got cratered primer. 41 gr lil gun and 250 bullet my cases are clean primers look perfect extract great and grouped better than with 39 or 40 gr. Did. If you remember I was playing with a load last year using 44 gr. Lil gun and 200 xpb. 2869 fps. Again faster it ran better it grouped. Ran out of my first pound and opened my 4# jug and that load didn't work anymore. My Encore is able to handle more pressure than AR's as well.

Well. I’m running about 40.0 grains of Lil Gun in my 250 shockwaves and all three of my rifles like it so yeah. I’ve just got to play a bit with COLs to get it where I want it.

2.29 COL Shockwaves
I stretched the 275 out quite a ways and didn't hit the lands. But I never shot them at the COL as I did the 200 Barnes and SW

I know this is an older post but where is the twist rate coming in that was mentioned? I see a 6 in difference in barrel length, The encore being a single shot break action as well.

294 fps difference, How much of that is barrel length?

Skinner

That was odd More posts showed after I typed my reply.............

I'd wager most of that velocity change was due to the additional 6" of barrel. Then there's the question of older Lil Gun vs newer Lil Gun. All my pet loads using Lil Gun from a few years back, went to hell using current production Lil Gun which for all outward appearances, runs hotter. My experience has been that twist does factor in but so does bore internal dimensions and rifling profile. IE Ratchet vs Conventional vs Polygonal. COL is also a factor but it doesn't look to be one in this comparison. Suffice it to say, the equation has many variables.

IMHO, chasing maximum safe velocity in this caliber falls behind ultimate accuracy, consistency and a general sense that the rifle likes the load, in terms of importance. The caliber is plenty lethal at velocities above 1800 fps, especially with cup and core bullets. I do get the fun of determining just how fast you can safely kick 'em out the end of the barrel, but its more akin to the joy of discovery than essential to lethality.
