Most Accurate Load

Postby randyf » Thu Nov 07, 2013 3:32 pm

Just wondering what everybody's most accurate load is?

Your favorite bullet, weight, and powder for your most accurate load..............

Remington 7 1/2 Primer
38gr Lil Gun
225gr Hornady FTX bullet seated until you can just barely see the cannelure peeking over the mouth (COL= around 2.15"
Taper Crimp to a resultant .474 mouth OD IE down into the cannelure like this

Here's the 100 yd 5-shot group

With all the tinkering, reaching, pushing the envelope, this is still my favorite bang for buck load.
It was my go-to white tail load until I switched to an all copper bullet using the 200gr Barnes XPB.
It's easy on the shoulder and fast to quickly recover your sight picture if you need a second shot.

Here's a video of it slamming into a stack of gallon jugs full of water. It goes by pretty fast = my first post there

The 450b is accurate with the right velocity of all three FTX bullets. (200, 225, 250). In the case of the 225gr, there is a second accuracy node at 41gr of Lil Gun in my 20" barrel but as you might imagine, it's not as tame as with 38gr. Tame is a subjective observation. You can go down the road to maximum velocity or really heavy bullets, but there is only one degree of dead. The 450b delivers dead. It certainly is entertaining to experiment with.

I'm using 38 grains lil-gun also.Everything is about the same as hoot's load except I'm using a side crimp and a taper crimp.I'm using a Tubb CWS and velocity is around 2450 fps.Last group I shot went 3/4 inch at 100.Trying different COL's,side crimp depth and distance from the case mouth can fine tune the load.
The 3/4 inch group had the COL a little longer and had the side crimp a little closer to the case mouth than what I usually use with the 225 hornady.Groups stay under inch and a half with different side crimp locations so the deer won't know the difference. The side crimp gets the powder burning pretty good and gets higher velocity.
Either way 38 grains lil-gun and rem 7 1/2 primers are hard to beat.

I have the same setup as Hoot and copied his recipe as above except that my rifle preferred 38.5g lil gun with the same accuracy results......My 11 year old daughter smoked two does this past weekend with that load....devastating whitetail load.

Hoot...if you don't mind, could you post your most accurate recipe for the 200 ftx? I can't locate it.

For the most easy handling load and I mean e-a-s-y, with the best 5-shot accuracy, 37gr Lil Gun Seated just like the 225 FTX and taper crimped into the cannelure. Tosses them at 2250fps. 5-shot group was 1", 4 flew inside .75" and 3 flew inside .5". 38gr Lil Gun was a close second. 5-shot 1.25" 4 flew inside .75" and 3 flew inside .5"

There is a second accuracy node using 40gr Lil Gun. Tosses them smokin' at 2420fps. 5-shot group was 1.25", 4 flew inside 1" and 3 flew inside .25" (almost the same hole).

All used the Remington 7 1/2 primer.

Don't feel like rummaging through the pile to find the actual targets, but they're in there somewhere. Besides, I'm at work right now, enjoying lunch.
