230 grain exposed lead base

Postby BW460 » Mon Dec 23, 2013 8:34 am

Is there any reason for my to shy away from using the 230 grain FMJ bullets that have an exposed lead base? Do the bases deform inconsistently at these velocities?

BTW, you might want to check any factory Hornady ammo you buy. I got a couple boxes in the mail yesterday. My first clue was when I opened the box and several pieces of the black plastic frame that the cartridges came in fell into my hand! Most of the bullets were driven too deep into the cases. One was driven in 0.1 inches! I checked that with QuickLoad and it predicted an increase in pressure of 1.5 times. That's a little scarry. I bumped the bullets out a little with a kinetic puller, reseated them and crimped them. Hopefully that will hold them. I was a little concerned by how easy it was to move the bullets around in the cases.

BW460-
As far as I know, there's no reason to be concerned about using any .451 or .452 bullet with an exposed lead base in the 450B. The Western Powder reloading manual lists several loads for the 450B with the Sierra 230-grain FMJ bullet.

Could you explain a bit further your question about inconsistent deformation and its relationship to velocity? These bullets will almost certainly upset (=expand at the base) to conform to the bore, but it's likely that the 450B pressures will ensure nothing more than a complete upset. Because the pressure of the gas is applied uniformly across the diameter of the bullet's base, there is likely to be uniform upset.

All of my MagTech FMJ tests were conducted with those types of jacketed lead bullets. No worries.

Thanks for your responses. I can get those bullets for about 13 cents a piece but have to buy a 1000 at a time. Since they were designed for 45 acp velocities I wanted to make sure I wasn't making a mistake buying them for the 450b.

You'll Love them, unless your trying to set a worlds record, but then again you can still set the record with some proper segregating. Hoot??

I use'em and will again, for 13 cents what is so bad 'bout dat? Can you share your source with these guys??

Hi-techammo has .452 230gr. FMJ's for $140.00 per 1000, that's the cheapest I can find.

Precision Delta has the round nose fmj 45s for $137 per thousand which includes shipping. But I think the fine print says you have to buy 2000 at a time which is why I have hesitated.
