Anyone have a link to some 300 gr jacketed projectiles ?

Once I get my brass collected I thought I might try 230's and 300's

Thanks :ugeek:

These and the Speer 300gr Gold Dots are a horse apiece, but it was hard finding them in stock anywhere.

And they are on the way ........... :D

I thought I would play with a bit more thump at a lower velocity with some 4227

Thanks Again !

BamBam-

There are numerous 300-grain jacketed bullets, with a few more listed below.

To find retailers, you can use google &/or other web search engines. Usually just the maker's name and the bullet number are sufficient. Midway shows most of them, even if they are out of stock.

  • Sierra 8830 .4515" dia (splitting the difference between .451 and .451) Flat nose. Sierra says it's the toughest bullet they make

  • Speer 3974 DeepCurl Bullets 452 Dia, Bonded, Hollow Point

  • Speer 4485 Flat nose soft point bullets

  • Swift 453004 Bonded, hollow point bullets

  • Scorpion PT Gold H14030 Tipped bullet, electroplated jacket. Comes with an easily-removed sabot for ML use.

  • Hornady 67263 Another tipped bullet, with an easily-removed sabot.

If you load and use any of these, please write a post here describing how they worked for you.
Thanks.

In the case of the last bullet listed by Bob, that is the Hornady P/N for the complete sabot round, so you're paying partly for the sabot you don't need. You can buy the bullets alone in boxes of 50, like the XTP Mag bullets, for around $23.00. Here's a Link to them.

I was surprised that in practice, despite having the ballistic tip, the ones I tried did not fly any better than the 300gr XTP Mag. I thought with their longer OAL and sleeker profile that they would. There's a good video and post-mortem of them being shot into water jugs on youtube.

Hoot-

In writing my post above, i checked availability of the Hornady 300-grain SST ML bullet sold without sabots (Hornady #45207) on Midway's site, and came up with this page: Hornady Muzzleloading Bullets 50 Caliber Sabot with 45 Caliber 300 Grain SST Box of 20. I saw they were discontinued, and so I listed the bullet as #67263 with sabots, which I have sitting on my bullet shelf after being de-saboted.

Your link to the Midway page listing the #45207 shows the bullets as being available: Hornady SST-ML Muzzleloading Bullets (No Sabot) 45 Caliber (.452 Diameter) 300 Grain Box of 50 .

I suspect that Hornady did not discontinue making the bullets, but just discontinued packaging them in boxes of 20 bullets priced at $27.99, and started distributing them in boxes of 50 priced at $31.99. That's pretty good: 30 more bullets for just $4.00 more. And they are available.

(On the Midway page showing the discontinued boxes of 20, the "Product Information" is really muddled, describing swaged round balls. Apparently a rough draft page made it onto the Midway web site. Ooopsie!)

Way back in 2009 Siringo noted that the pointy SST 300-grain bullet did not fly as flat as the 300-grain XTP, despite having a better ballistic coefficient according to Hornady (.200 vs. .250) Very strange. I've got both bullets loaded for some initial trials with 300-MP when the U.P. defrosts in the spring.

Thanks.

Thanks all for the extra info, it will give me more options to play with once I get farther into the 450b.

What kind of max velocities have been reached with the 300 XTP Mag ? Any separation issues ?

I am going to start out slower with 4227 as I have about 10lbs of it left, but will eventually play around with other powders and look for upper limits

(My MMMV and I alone am responsible for anything I do with anything I reload, etc .... ) :ugeek:

According to Quickoad. Loading the 300 XTP Mag to 2.21 inch OAL and using a maximum SAAMI recommended charge of 38.8gr, the bullet will leave a 20" muzzle at 2011 fps and blow 1 gr of unburned powder out of the barrel since as already discussed, H4227 is a little slow. With the shorter, 16" carbine barrel, that velocity drops to 1929 fps and you blow 2gr of unburned powder out of the barrel. In my work with the 300gr XTP Mag, I could only load it out to 2.21 inches OAL before it ran into the rifling. A barrel with a longer cut leade could allow you to load it out to the full 2.26 OAL, though that would only allow using so little more powder as to net you about 20 more fps.

Sounds like a great candidate for a "LeGendre Side Crimp". Get things AH-Cook'en before the bullet leaves the case..
