Hangfires in my 450 handloads

First off, I'm no beginner to reloading with nearly 35yrs on more than a dozen calibers. That said, I'm still learning as well. I have loaded some 450BM rounds with 230gr FMJ bullets over 43gr LilGun and S&B SR primers, side crimped w/modified Lee FCD. I'm having hangfires with nearly every round I've shot, probably 25 now. What would cause this? I even had (1) squib and (1) FTF. I've never experienced this before now, ever. Possible causes?

Try changing your primers. :P

Yeah try magnum primers. Though I find it a little odd, your experience, when using a stab crimp.

lil gun shouldnt need magnum primers to ignite well, but it sounds like it may have a sh!t batch of primers.

the only S&B i've used were SP and those worked fine, although they are just a RCH bigger than CCI's so i had some trouble with them going in tight in a few. no huge deal, was maybe 5 out of 300-400 38 specials i loaded with them.

Primers are my primary suspect as well. I have had great success with #41 CCI in the past reloading the 450. I'm giving them another try since they are the only other small rifle primers I have. Magnum small rifle primers are not available locally.

41's (and 34's) ARE magnum primers, they're just constructed with the thicker military spec cup material.

those should work righteously for you :)

Problem solved. I guess S&B SR primers are not hot enough for the 450BM. They work great in my 6.8SPC's and 30HARP

I've used the Remington 7-1/2, Winchester, and CCI (400's, I think) without any problems. I have not noted any meaningful difference in performance.
