Thought I'd throw this out there. midway has the 460 S&W FCD on sale for $11.49. You wouldn't have to remove much from the bottom to get it to locate the crimp in the right spot on a 450b case.

Gentleman

I modified a LFC 45/70, it came out great, however, my crimp results don't seem to look like the ones I have seen here. I have attached pictures of what I am getting. Am I doing something wrong or did I miss a step?
I left the width of the crimp stock. Long story but I tried narrowing it on my first attempt, its in the trash.

The first picture I crimped an empty sized case. The pedals on the die closed with no daylight between them pretty easy.

The second picture, the 4 to the left, I seated the bullets and crimped them with the LFC as well as a taper crimp. I pulled one projectile after, (the 3rd from the left) as for the pull, my point of reference is driving a 16 p nail with one hit as my reference. The majority of the projectile came out with one hit.
You can see the projectile that I pulled has no visible signs of a crimp. I know you can do too much but I don't see anything.

The two on the right I used a taper crimp only. I pulled one of them as well, there was no difference that I could tell with the pulling of the projectile.

Any thoughts, hope or prayer appreciated

It looks like the width of the bite is so wide that it is not transferring to the inside of the case wall. That's why it's important to narrow the bite width. Easiest way it to come in from the end with a tapered stone. Way too hard to remove material from the inboard side of the bite.

Forgive the quick drawing.

I'd take it off the top like Hoot mentioned, but I wouldn't change the angle that it mates to inside the die.

If your gonna use a lathe, just chamfer the ID from the top side, that will reduce the thickness also.

Thanks for the info Hoot

That's was I tried on my first attempt, I pulled it apart and beveled it with a tapered stone.
The problem was, I'm not real patient so I ground to much off trying to do it perfect the first time without testing.
I also ordered a LFC for the S&W 460 to play with. Should get that at the end of the week
Thanks

Remember what the Barber says! ;)

I didn't mean to imply in my drawing that you change the angle. I was at work and not in a position to look at both a new and finished die. More of a concept drawing.

Thanks again guys for the help.

I spent a little time last night and reduced the side crimp by approx 50% and loaded some rounds. The crimp looks far better and a bit more pronounced.
For my usage I think it will work well, Barnes with cannelure for hunting is the most important to me as far as accuracy goes, so I'm excited to load some of those to test.
