Questions about taper crimp with Hornady Die.

Postby giannid » Wed Aug 30, 2017 1:49 pm

I'm going to be loading up some rounds to develop a load for my 450 soon. I'll be shooting the 250 FTX bullets. I figured I'd go buy a box of the factory Hornady ammo to copy the crimp as I figured they got it right. Today I called the only place around that has it in stock and they want $38 per box for the ammo. I hate to spend that kind of money just to try and copy the crimp. I figured with a factory round I could put it in the press and screw down the taper crimp until it was snug and it would give me a good starting point. I know most are saying to crimp until you get .472 at the mouth of the case. Can anyone post a picture of where exactly this measurement is taken? I would guess this is a hard place to measure since it's a tapered crimp. A picture of a perfectly crimped round would be nice. Any advice or help would be appreciated. :D

Yes. I can help you. But I need to get home first. Simply put, its right at the case mouth.

Watch how much you taper crimp, when not crimping into a cannelure or driving. It doesn't take much to deform the bullets: Try starting at .476, then go to .475, then .474. I usually stick to .475, unless it's at a cannelure or driving band, then I usually take it to .473. But that's me.

$38 a box is insane!

I'm in Chardon Ohio. This is the first year they're allowing us to hunt deer in Ohio with this round so I imagine it will be in high demand in the fall. Right now only one place locally has them. I found them online for $21 per box if I purchased 200 rounds. Almost doesn't make sense to reload at that price but I like to load my own ammo so I can fine tune to what the rifle likes.

Thanks for the pic. It helps but it's kind of blurry. Maybe someone can post one a little better.

literally man, take the measurement as close to the case mouth as you can. if you're having trouble keeping your calipers from falling off the edge of the brass and sliding down onto the bullet - you're at the right spot. 8-)
