Yukon Moose and the 450 Bushmaster

Postby North61 » Sun Sep 17, 2017 10:46 pm

My 14 year old son took his first Moose yesterday. 450 Bushmaster at 100-125 yards, Factory ammo loaded with the 250 Hornady FTX bullet that goes 2100fps out of his Ranch Rifle. We can reload them hotter but hard to improve on the accuracy. The bullet hit behind the foreleg and angled forward to stop in front of the far shoulder. The moose stood for about 5 seconds then fell and couldn't get up again. Retained weight of the bullet 213.1 grains! Pretty great rig! Nice combination of low recoil and good hitting power. I was worried that the 250 grain bullet was too light for diameter but this Hornady FTX seems to think it's a premium bullet.

Your son did a fine job! Apparently you taught him well, congrats to both you!

I'm curious, do you know what the expanded diameter was on that bullet?

0.525x 0.81 is the expanded diameter.

My son has been shooting for a while. He started with a .243 but the .450 is easy for him. He finds the recoil very easy to handle, and shoots it well. This moose wanted to run from his but I froze him with some calls and simulated antler display. This allowed us to get within an easy shooting range. Pretty good day

Nice to see the bullet leave all of its energy in the animal, not in the tree behind them. ;)
