.460 S&W dies

Postby meistermash » Tue Dec 05, 2017 9:52 am

Anyone try reloading the 450b with .460 dies?
I have two sets of 45 acp dies, one 45clot set, 45.70 and a set of .460 S&W dies.
Any reason I can't get these to work? Sadly I have no lee crimp die to modify for the side crimp in those.
My bf buying has moved my monetary scale for the next 6 months.

I have two boxes of 225gr ftx, one box of factory ammo and a hoard of powders that should work. Got the rest covered is what I'm saying sort of. :D

wont work, 450B is bigger at the base than the 460 is.

Different parent case. Different dimensions.

Also the .460S&W uses .458 size bullets versus the .450B using .452 size bullets. So it likely won’t crimp well.

No, the 460 uses .452 bullets same as 450.

45-70 uses .458 thou

Yep. That was my rational of going 450b over 458. I have a 460 V. I have bullets for that as well as the 225ftx that I bought but Hornaday doesn't have data for them in the 460. Or didn't.
So they grew into a ar upper in 450b.
The 460 takes a tough bullet because of the cylinder jump into the throat. A thin jacketed bullet will squirsh all out and can bust the forcing cone. Or so they say. :|
And yes I know there is no official data for the 225gr cept for here, and yes I could load them in the 460 anyway using reduced data and shorter case.
But then I wouldn't have needed a 450b upper.
Every where is out, it seems, of the Lee 450 dies, midway and midsouth have Hornaday for $65 on sale.
Might go that route.
Modded a couple of magazines last night. A Brownells straight 20 and a Hex 30 with a 20rnd spring. Ruined a pmag 20 curved and that was the spring I used in the hex.

I've been using the Hornady die set for almost 8 years on my 450b. Thousands (seriously, plural) of reloads later and its still doing a great job. All I can recommend, if you don't already do so, is tumble your brass before resizing to keep debris from wearing on the sizing die. I love the Hornady seating dies with the bullet aligner. Eliminates the need for the expander die in my single stage presses. You'll get better neck tension, which is critical for best performance, if you never stretch the mouths versus stretching them and squeezing them back down upon the bullet, due to spring-back.

PS: I paid as much back almost 8 years ago as the price you stated. That's a plus for you.

ill agree with hoot - nothing at all wrong with the hornady dies. for the price, being a 4 die set - sizer, seater, expander and crimp - its worth it. you're looking at what... 16.xx for each die?

i do like to expand for the 225 ftx just a bit, as they really go in tight without it and i was worried about shaving the jackets. give it just a light touch - you'll feel the difference in seating once you hit the sweet spot - and then crimp them back as suggested.

i loaded a few at 36 grains non expanded before i got nervous about the jackets getting damaged, and they were quite a bit warmer than expected due to the extra neck tension. once i got into expanded/crimped ones my fps numbers came back to normal. i was a couple hundred fps above my target load speeds at around 2 grains under the target charge weight. :?

The Seating Die is the same for both the 460 S&W and the 450 BM. I wanted an extra one for the Bushmaster and Hornady sent me the 460 with a note that they were the same. Don't know about the Sizing Die, but I suspect not.

I never use the Expander Die for either the 250 or 225 FTX.

My apologies, my brain short circuited at the time.
