450 BM Pet Load Board

If something like this has been done I apologize - it was nothing I could find in a search. Something that’s alive and well over on snipers hide that I think would be cool for the 450 peeps. Would like to see what people are finding in accuracy loads for the 450. Any and all bullets, primers, powder, guns, barrels, etc. Any readers be very aware that what is good or safe in one gun might not be good or safe in yours and any load mimicking will be done at readers risk. Some powder charges may be above manufacturers recommended max charge. I think we are all adults here and should go without saying, but any of these should be worked up slowly while checking for pressure signs the entire way. I’ll start with with one I worked up that was 1/2 MOA out passed 250 yards and well under 1 MOA @ 400 yards (bipod and squeeze bag with Giessele SSA trigger)

Factory Bushy Upper 16” 1:24 BBL
Hornady 250 Grain FTX Bullet
CCI BR-4 Primer
38.6 Grains Lil Gun
COAL - Copied Factory Hornady Loaded Ammo (and crimp dia)
2275 FPS (ran over a magneto chrono)

I just picked up a Christensen Arms Mesa in 450 (20” 1:16) and can not wait to get some load development rolling for it. Hoping it likes what or similar to what that AR shot so well.

My pet load:

16" factory Bushey with Ross brake
Hornady 300gr XTP mag
CCI 450
45gr 1680
seated just under the cannuler, feeds great from a standard Pmag.
shoots MOA @ 100
never chronoed it but she puts the thump in Thumper :o

Energy content of the two different powders can't be compared apples to apples. I've loaded with both of them.

To be honest, 32gr of Lil Gun under a 300 XTPM in the 450b, is by standards, a tame load. That having been said, Lil Gun is a Lil Fast for 300 grainers. Usable, but on the fast side. Conversely, 1680 is a Lil Slow for them. Only 91-92% of the powder burns in a 20" 1:24 before the bullet exits. In choosing powders to try on a load, I like to shoot (no pun intended) for 96-100% burn. That having been said, an efficient use of powder does not automatically equate to an effective load in terms of performance. Then there's the argument for also favoring a powder that uses up as much case space for a given bullet as possible. It also has merit. If you can achieve both, you get a brass ring. ;)

as usual Hoot you are correct. That load just dumps the brass out of the gun, no real flinging like Lilgun, just a 2' dump at 3:00, but never had a FTF or FTE with it to date. Bought two 8# jugs for $100 few years back, so gotta use it up somewhere!!!!

I've found 1680 is a hard powder to get into trouble with in most straightwalled cases, in the 357 Maxi Encore and my 458 and 500 AIMMs I run out of room to seat bullets before I ever see any tell tale pressure signs we normally look for.
