Rklenke wrote:Texas, I noticed your OAL with the fmj is a bit longer than mine. Did you base your seat depth off the ogive and lands? For mine I tried to compromise between the above and having the bullets diameter seated in the case (which is impossible).

Have you measured your chamber freebore? Mine is very generous on all three of my rifles. I just try to close that distance as best I can while still allowing the cartridge to feed in the magazine.
I really need to do a video on this issue.

No, I'll admit with the cannelure bullets, I'll just seat to those to help with retention in crimping. With the fmjs, I measured 1.95" from base to ogive and used that as a starting point for seat depth.

I suppose my concern is more about keeping more of the bullet in the case for retention then getting close as possible to the lands, or at least a compromise between the two.

I've been taking to the owner of Black Butterfly Ammunition, and they will have some 240 grain frangibles available soon for reloading. Now these are long and light (240) and I think would work well with a long seat depth, distance to the lands, and LilGun.

I would be very leery of putting those frangibles in a 1:16 twist. I would probably not even venture to send them down a 1:24 twist until I knew exactly what the velocities were going to be and how well they are manufactured.

The manufacturer loads them to just under 2000 fps. My best educated guess without pulling a bullet is that they have about 44 grains of powder. Again, guessing that's slow burning since it's a full case fill (can't hear the powder shake) and only getting 2000 fps.

Seems like the manufacturer gives them a gentle push out of the barrel.

I wonder if they're using 1680 or something similar. Seems they're trying to keep the pressure and velocity down on the frangible bullets.

That would be my guess as well but damn, that's way outside the sweet zone weight wise, for 1680. In a 20 inch barrel, 1/4 of the powder is going out the bore unburned.

Well, less than stellar 100 yard range report with the FMJs. I don't even have a group to post. I literally could not hit the target. I may try again with 1680 or from 50 yards, but pretty disappointing.

On the other hand, solid results with 300 XTP and 1680. 41.5 grains.

Solid results on the black butterfly ammo as well. 4 shot group, one shot didn't record.

I've got pictures of groups and a recovered frangible I may post later.

Let me ask you.... are the FMJs “TRUE” FMJs? Or are they plated? Because plated bullets will fly apart at the speeds that we are sending these bullets at. They MUST be real copper or brass/bronze metal jackets.

They are true FMJ. You can see lead at the base. Here is a pic of the jacket.

Here's my 300 XTP over 1680. Will be going to this for hunting for sure. Very happy with this load.

Here's the 4 shot Black Butterfly Ammo "Smasher" rounds. Once they come out with these in component, I'll be sure to pick some up for plinking.

No picture for the FMJs, but here's a side by side of the 3 projectiles. I'll work up a 1680 FMJ load for the 230s. If that doesn't work at 100 yards, I'll throw in the towel for that bullet.
