425gr Maker's Subsonic!

So I was looking around at 450B components, and saw that Maker's is now making a 425gr expanding bullet for the 450B! They recommend a 1:16 twist rate, but I played with Berger's twist rate calculator and it shows that a 1:18 twist should work just fine, a 1:20 twist might work depending on elevation and temp.

I liked their .223 subsonic expanding.. really opened up at 1000fps.. Thinking of giving the 308 ones a go..

the Rex series in 308 work very well. The guys at maker worked with several of the brighter minds over on the 300 blk website to get them tweaked and flying correctly as the early versions had some bugs to address (stability issues in varying twists).

otherwise the expansion is incredible and they really put a hurtin down when metal meets meat :)

I have a couple other Maker's bullets to work up, but from what I've seen, they make some nice stuff. I also really like the fact that you can call them, and you talk directly to the owner, and he will experiment with just about anything. I was going to try his 250gr .458 bullets in the 450B (size them down of course), and had a couple questions about dimensions. When I told the owner (can't remember his name) what I was trying to do, he said he would make them the correct size. I said I wanted to try .4515, and he made them. I still haven't really worked up the 250gr yet (I will get around to it), but I ordered some the 425gr to play with, and I think I might see if he can make around a 200gr version.

can you take a pic and measure the depth of that nose cavity?

i'll be curious to learn as to how that long heavy soup can stabilizes in a 24 twist barrel.

this might be a prime candidate for those fast twist barrels out there (1:16) - at least for use in the subsonic realm.

although going into a target sideways at 975 fps w/ full tumble could produce some interesting results too!

Don't know why the pic came out turned. From my phone its upright. Ill see if I can fix it.

Al, the nose cavity is about .800" deep. The three cuts on the outside of the bullet are about .720" long. What exactly do you want a pic of? The hollow point?

Plant_one, I measured the bullet length and it is 1.3810". when playing with a twist rate calculator it looks like at a speed of 1050fps, temp of 0*, and an elevation of 0ft, a 1:18 twist should fully stabilize it. A 1:20 should be able to with some elevation and temp increase. I have a 12.5" Blackhole weaponry barrel (1:18 twist) I will try them in. Chances are it won't cycle because I ordered it with a carbine length gas system. I will probably look around for decent priced barrel, somewhere between 9.5"-12.5", with a pistol length gas system, and at least a 1:18 twist.
